I've never owned a keyless car that it was possible to lock with a key fob inside the car. Which of course you normally wouldn't have it out of your pocket or purse, because it is, uh, keyless.

Both my 1995 W210 and 2002 W211 required a key inserted in the ignition to start the car. IIRC the W211 keyless go was a credit card sized but thicker hunk of plastic.

EDIT

I just ran a test. I placed my key in the console cup holder and exited the car. I was able to lock the car with the key inside. MB only cares if there is a key outside the car which there was one in my wife's purse.

I don't understand all this talk about keys, both my keys are locked in my weapon locker.. I'm just using my cellphone both for unlocking, starting and locking.. The best thing is that the phone with Mercedes Me is able to lock the car from outside the car. (I'm using this feature sometimes)

Doesn't work when you have to leave the car with an attendant at a restaurant, parking lot, service facility, etc., unless you're willing to give them your phone, too. Also don't you still have to pull out your phone, open the app, wait for it to connect, and press the unlock key and then the start key? FOB much more convenient IMHO.

The cellphone feature is not available in the US.

Just curious — what cellphone feature is not available in the U.S. that is available elsewhere? I ask because I'm in California and the Mercedes.me app on my iPhone has both "Remote Start" and "Lock & Unlock" button. Although I never use either of those features, I have tested them and they do work.

Thank you all. I very much appreciate the confusion around MBWorld. It makes me feel less alone.

The feature uses your cellphone via Bluetooth so it acts the same as your key fob. It works similar to using your cellphone like a credit card, just get the phone near the car and it unlocks and enables the start/stop button.

With Mercedes me remote start, one cannot drive the car using that feature because a remotely started car will turn off when the car door is opened or after 15 minutes whichever occurs first.

It is based on speed from a stop. Always locks my doors at around 12-13mph (=20kph, so that makes sense to me). The owners manual states this, but I can't find it atm.

I would never let anyone drive my car, I'm actually present at the workshop while doing the service. I'm also parking my car in the container and driving it out of the container when shipping it to the mainland.
To lock the car with engine running I need to use the app, to unlock and start the car from parked mode I can just tap the door handle with my phone first, then put the phone in the wireless charger which also has NFC.

To use the phone like a key fob it's using NFC, not bluetooth.

Sorry, I got them mixed. Indeed it is NFC.

The lid of my cup holder console is labeled with NFC, but I do not know what it is used for. My service tech says it helps with connecting the phone to the car, but that is Bluetooth.

You can use NFC instead of a wifi password to connect your phone to the COMAND hotspot. Most people don't know about this feature so they go the SSID/password route. The theory is if you have the key, you should be authorized to use the hotspot.

NFC is also how the car validates a key fob with a dead battery. That "put key in designated spot" message is telling you to get the key within NFC range. (The NFC tag in the key doesn't need any power. It draws its power by magnetic induction from the car, which is why MB can provide this dead-key fail-safe mechanism.)

I've never seen anything about a NFC hotspot. I don't use the MB wifi hotspot because it requires a MB subscription. Instead I turn on my phone's hotspot and use its unlimited data.

There is no NFC hotspot, NFC is not suitable for transferring large amounts of data. NFC is made for tranfers of small amounts of data. Like wireless payment at card terminals, unlocking car doors and so on.

The most useful case for NFC in a car is of course to use a cellphone as a key.

The hotspot is wifi. NFC is an alternate mechanism to authenticate the wifi connection. Read my post again, carefully. Or the manual.
