Brake pad replacement

Hi All,

I have a 2021 E-Class with approx. 30,000 KM on the odometer. On my second service last week (authorized Mercedes service center in Dubai) I was asked to replace the brake pads even though I did not get any prompt on MBUX.

Is it normal to have the brake pads replaced this soon? I always remember changing them close to 50,000 KM on my other cars.

Also, the cost quoted to me was approx. US$ 1600 - which again I am not sure is the “normal” price - I find it a tad bit on the higher side.

What are your thoughts on this?

50,000 km seems about normal. That's over 30k miles, and in my experience. 30k miles is usually how long brake pads last. $1600 does seem quite high. I've generally paid around $400 for all brake pads to be replaced (parts plus labor) on any car. An E-class shouldn't cost any more than any other car.

Thanks a lot for your response. I also feel that it may have been a misguided recommendation. I will look into it again.

Appreciate your response.

Im sure at that price, they are also replacing the rotors. Mercedes does not resurface rotors, and dealers always change it with the pads to make an extra buck

is that cost for 4 sets of pads and 4 rotors? Either you do a lot of hard braking or the dealer is trying to make some extra money. I would get a second opinion

One I worked on cars, the beauty of disc vs. drum brakes was the ease of replacing the pads vs. replacing the drum brakes. Time was less than half.

Unless the rotors were scored we never touched the rotors.

Then about 20/30 years, whether necessary or not, dealers started to turn the rotors. This was an extra profit center for the dealer.

Now dealers are going a step forward: they no longer turn rotors when replacing the pads but want to replace the rotors as well: this is even a greater profit center for the dealer.

Take a look at your rotors and notice how thick they are: if they are not warped, you would notice it when your are braking, and not scored, then there is no reason to replace them.

Save the money and only replace the pads.

BTW, I have almost 30,000 miles on my E450 and their is plenty of pad left on my brakes. However, about 50% of my mileage is highway and I drive moderately and do not tailgate or slam on the brakes. As all disc pads today have sensors that give you advance warning when pads need to be replaced. Until that sensor in your dashboard lights up, I personally would not change my pads.

It's all about how you drive. My experience when drving in Gulf States is slam on the brakes at the last minute and maybe the effects of all that sand abrade the material quicker? I got 50k km from my rear pads and 100k km from my front pads (even then they were only about 75% worn but I needed to replace the disks). If you want to see whats involved then look at my YouTube channel as I cover front and rear brakes on my videos.
