From DC-tristate to NYC: Super chargers

Hey there, so I went for the first time to a Tesla super charger and realized it was a V3 station, which meant the cable was too short for me to charge my EQS SUV. Given all the other stations were occupied, I was not able to charge. Plus I am super uncomfortable taking up two spots in a busy charging place. This however was a test run for my upcoming NYC trip.

So questions:
a) Neither MBUX nor the Tesla app tells me if the super charger station is v3 or v4 - I had to go there to figure it out. Any tips on how I can make sure I only map to V4s?
b) As I plan my trip from the DC area to NYC (Manhattan is where our hotel is), what is the best way to plan charging so that I only charge once on my way up and once on my way back, ideally? Which app should I use? I was a little disillusioned by both MB and Tesla apps today because they took me to a place I couldn't charge if I had to stay in one slot. I don't necessarily have to use Tesla, EA super chargers are fine too - but they need to all be fast chargers.

Check out supercharge.info, which lists V4 stations either in operation or under construction. Much of the data is crowd-sourced so it is pretty up to date based upon a combination of manufacturer available data as well as user reports. Tons of superchargers (and the app lists V3 as well) but not a lot of V4 chargers.

The only Tesla Superchargers that appear on the navigation unit are compatible V3/V4 chargers. Also, when I was setting up my Tesla app, I selected my car, and only compatible chargers appeared. There is a non-compatible Supercharger station that I drive by almost every day, and it never shows up when I search.
Does anyone know if Tesla is planning update their V1/V2 superchargers?

That is a legitimate concern for non-Tesla owners charging at Supercharger stations that are busy. A2Z EV is developing an NACS DC Extension Cord to resolve this issue that should be available soon. Here is a link to their upcoming product:

The V4 rollout seems slow. The V1/V2 stations will most likely not see any upgrade and probably are slated for replacement with V4 or later.

But it's slow. There is a bank of 20 V4 chargers that have been sitting installed but still covered up near me in Teaneck, NJ. It has been months and Tesla is mum on activation time. I periodically see the utility company at the site (it is in parking lot of Glenpointe Marriot Hotel) and just today drove by. It would be a good charging point enroute to NYC since it is just off I-95 and 5 miles or so back on 95 to the GW Bridge or 15 minutes or so doubling back to the south to get to Lincoln Tunnel.

I was in Newark a couple of weeks ago and stayed across from The Mills at Jersey Gardens. Their parking lost has a section of both Tesla and EA chargers I do believe. Since this is about 20 miles from the city it could be a good stop for you as well

So then while we're talking North Jersey (Hey, I'm driving here)-- The Jersey Mills outlet stations often are congested with rental EVs from the EWR rental companies. Probably less so now that Hertz has gutted its EV fleet, but that could be of concern.

More exciting, though, would be the V4 chargers in one of the parking lots of American Dream Mall. Must pay a few dollars for the parking lot, but check it out if you've never heard of it. Combination of major amusement park and high end mall. Particularly if you have kids, pay to park and charge your EV and then enjoy the amusements. If you do everything, you'll need all day and it will cost you the equivalent of a month's lease on your EV, but that would be so much fun. From there, you're right at 495 into Lincoln Tunnel or continue on 95 north to GWB.

Depending upon where you are in DC area, American Dream would be 250 miles or so. Definitely within range of full charge.

Even to see American Dream is worth the few $ for parking. And you get V4 chargers so not blocking spaces.

Hard to believe any car built in 2020s can’t make it from DC to New York without stopping… quite pitiful actually. Even my 20-year-old gas guzzling V8 SUV can do that. Who on earth gets roped into these terrible pseudo cars which are nothing more than a child’s toy? I just don’t get the complete inconvenience to easy travel. So much evolution was done to make cars comfortable and efficient in their travel and I could never imagine hanging out at a Walmart or a charge station or some random parking lot as part of an itinerary let alone waiting in line or paying for the experience.

Old vs new tech and associated growing pains.
That said, your post isn’t constructive and off-topic.

That is indeed correct, but the problem is the app doesn't tell me which one is a V3 or V4. They are both technically compatible, but one requires me to either cover two spots, or be lucky enough to get the rightmost spot so I can park outside of it. The supercharge.info website however seems to differentiate which is helpful.

Indeed - I've been refreshing that website page for weeks now - I'll buy it for sure.

Great - thank you! Let me plan the route out and see how far it detours!

How interesting - I've been this route many times (DC area - NYC) but have never heard about the mall. It looks great!

The trip was fabulous - we charged at the walmart super charging stations (EA) in East Brunswick and had many other options at our disposal. Did not have to take a chance at the Tesla stations. This officially takes the range anxiety out of us, at least for the DC - NYC trips. We did not need to charge on the way up, but stopped there to charge on the way back home. Thank you all for the recommendations!

The V4 stations will show up on the MB Navigation map as 325kW Superchargers. V3 stations are 250kW.
