Finally Picked up my EQS 580

I was able to finally pick up my new 580 yesterday. I placed the order the first day the MB computer systems would allow it. I was first the first allocation for my dealership and was able to get it for MSRP.

Timeline:
produced 11/5/21
Baltimore VPC 12/28/21
VPC delayed 1/11/22
VPC ready 1/20/22
Arrived at dealer 1/27/22
I picked up 1/28/22

Of note, a friend of mine went with me the same day and placed his order immediately after mine. He was number 2 in the queue for that dealership. He still doesn’t have a build date for his car. There is now 4 people on the waitlist (with number 4 being a very prominent local billionaire) and they don’t expect them to have the car for about a year. Maybe I’ll just sell to the rich guy……

First thoughts:
It’s awesome. The interior is a show stopper and just feels different than anything I’ve ever been in before. The AI for the MBUX is vastly improved over previous versions. I traded in an E43 (which I loved) to get this car and it’s a huge tech upgrade. It will take a long time for me to learn all the bells and whistles for me even though I’m already familiar with MB. The interface with your phone is much better than my e43. So much so that I don’t think I’ll use Apple CarPlay at all. I think I’ll just use MBUX which I was the opposite in my other car. The augmented heads up display is really cool. Once you program in a destination it is really impressive all the info it gives and how much better it looks than my old version. I find myself saying “hey Mercedes’ take me home” just so I can get the turn by turn through the HUD even though I already know the directions.

The seats are very comfortable, more so than my e43. I had the massage seats and bolsters in my old car and they are basically the same here, but overall the seats are just nicer. I’m unsure if I like the “pillow” headrest yet. My wife loves it but I’m not sure if I like it or not. The backseat is enormous. I’ve never had legroom like this in the back seat (though I’ve also never had an S class). I have 2 tween daughters and this car will be very comfortable for all 4 of us. The trunk also seems huge. I haven’t put my golf clubs or anything in it yet, but it looks really big compared to my e43.

It’s the first electric car I’ve owned, so maybe this is the same reaction everyone gets from an electric car - but WOW is it fast. Starting off the line from a stoplight is comical compared to other cars. It’s also great on the highway if you want to accelerate to pass someone. When I accelerate my wife says she feels like she’s in a plane about to take off. It is super fun to drive!

The passengers comments have been about the acceleration, the touchscreen display and the size/comfort and quiet of the ride. That and feeling like a plane is taking off when I floor it
The passenger side touchscreen is cool to have, but a little disappointing as it doesn’t do much. It’s basically the same as the old MBUX operating system. It’s nice they can control from over there, but functionally it would be just as easy for them to reach out to the middle display for the same controls. It is cool that you can hook up Bluetooth headset and then they can listen to their own music with their own controls, but other than that the display looks cool without other added functionality.

One thing about the interior is their isn’t really an easy way to close the door when you are inside. There is a gap where you can put your hand to pull the door closed, but it’s not obvious to people who get in the car the first time. 3 times already I’ve had to show people how to close the door.

Overall (after 24 hours) - I’m thrilled and super excited about this car. Best I’ve ever owned by far (but also 40K more than I’ve ever paid before). One of my friends who is big into BMW and has a number of high end ones said “this car is amazing. It feels like what all future cars will be like.” I agree!

(I’m out of town until Monday but will post more and answer whatever questions anyone has when I get back and drive it some more.)

Congrats on finally receiving your build. Hope you enjoy the car for many happy miles. And be sure to keep us updated on how your range and efficiency are over the course of ownership.

Gorgeous car, enjoy!! Removing the pillow headrests is pretty easy as well, the exact instructions are in the manual.

Beautiful car, congratulations!! Loved the review. Also congrats on getting MSRP on a custom order. My local dealer told me a custom order would be marked up so I walked out.

Same situation as myself! E43 to eqs 580😁. How's the audio? Same or better? From my quick test drive, it was quickly noticeable that the ride is a lot smoother (as expected). Since I live in and are with few curvy roads, all I can say about handling is that it felt confident but not sporty. Must say...... feeling a lot of "good envy" Thanks for the picks👍

E43 —> 580, love it!

sound system is maybe a little better but I haven’t really played with it yet. As you said, the ride is smoother but I wouldn’t call it sporty - especially around curves.

I forgot to mention the turning radius is amazing. My driveway is at a 100 degree turn to get into my garage. With the e43 if my wife was already parked in the garage I’d have to do a 3 point turn to get in. With the EQS I make it just on a regular turn even though the EQS is longer than the e43 was. Pretty slick.

The E43 is most definitely a curb banger; even our GLS 580 has better parking ability!

Congrats! All of the EQS580 “benchwarmers” are waiting to be called into the game. Correct me if I am wrong, but you are the first custom order forum member to receive EQS 580 and post about it. Best of luck with your purchase and thanks for sharing your enthusiasm helps quench the thirst of waiting.

Congratulations, @Toad . I have only one question - why did you take a picture of my car ? I started a thread for owners' impressions, if you want you can post there too. Makes it easier to follow up for all of us. Gorgeous car, love the Napa seats. I got the dealer demo, it is a bare-bones car, plan to upgrade it whenever my place in line comes up. Sounds like at least 6 months wait.

Gorgeous car, congratulations! Hope you have many years of enjoyment. I paid MSRP as well, plus got a great trade in deal. Dealer was actually very excited to be able to sell one, I was their first,.

Thanks everyone!

The color is gray.

I don’t remember when I first ordered. It was maybe 3 weeks after the unveiling? I had to place the order with no idea on price but if course i could’ve canceled at anytime without a penalty.

Thanks for providing an accurate timeline. I am wondering if the new build date for EQS 580 to delivery is 90 days, based on your numbers. Avilent - I know you are out there in the ether, any luck with getting your 580 or still stuck in VPC?

Depends on dealer allocation. I asked my local dealer in Utah yesterday and he said new orders would take a year to come in.

That just a flipoff answer that takes into consideration that all the cars planned for 2022 have been allocated already. Ergo his best guess is that if you want to order a car, your allocation will not be filled till 2023. Remember allocation does not mean sold! If you want to find a car this year you (your dealer)will have do a nationwide search to see what unsold units there are nationwide and if the dealer is willing to let it go (and for how much). The dreaded ADM.

Frustrating for buyers those with a car built waiting to take delivery and those who have ordered but have no allocation. If you don’t want to wait for one, you have to cough up the ADM, unfortunately. Unless you buy an EQS from Anchorage, Alaska and drive it to the continental US.

Very true and this is my first experience talking to this dealer. I didn’t leave with a warm and fuzzy feeling, that’s for sure.

Every EV on the market right now has a waiting list. It's bad and good news. I was lucky to get an allocation in Nov. We'll see when that is. It was the first car I have bought sight unseen.

congrats on the ride. Looks pretty cool. Would love to know what the real world range is once you have had a some time to baseline it.
