How to improve your winter range.

When the thermometer goes below the teens.....SLOW DOWN! 55mph max. Doing so will cut your winter losses by more than half. Keep your heater at 65 or less. Personally, I never understood why people keep the cabin in the 70s since, if you are running the heater, you are probably wearing winter clothing while you drive! Use the seat heaters to kill the initial chill and then turn them off. They heat a lot faster than the AC and use less power overall. It gives the AC a chance to heat more gradually and save a lot of energy doing so. If you control your speed and use the AC to keep your cabin at a comfortable rather than sauna temperature, your losses from the cold should be around 25%. Finally, use cabin preconditioning if your car is outside and most particularly if its plugged in!

Definitely agree. Just took delivery of my EQS and the weather is cold and trashy (relatively speaking). Took a loaner on a 700 mile road trip with 20" wheels and had great range. Mine has the 21" AMG wheels and the range isn't as good although it is colder today than it was last weekend. Also have the summer tires which are a tad noisy at highway speed, I think I may switch out to range optimized all-season rubber at some point.
Long time lurker, new EQS owner and delighted with what I have seen!

Not much better in central Iowa. We are now near Akron, OH. All day driving this past Sunday. Had to make 4 charging stops due to temperature of 8 degrees from central to eastern Iowa since we left at 4:45 AM. Warmed up to only the mid 20s in most of IL and the rest of the trip. I only charged the car for 30 minutes each time at EA chargers.

I think my average range was about 280 miles at about 80-90% charge each time. I could have charged it to 100% but I didn’t feel like it. I can obviously afford the cost after 30 minutes but it would take longer to get to 100%. I decided to warm tthe cabin temperature to 67 and turn it off completely for a while. Then I repeated the cycle.

Your advice is fantastic. I will try that approach on the way back January 4. It looks like the weather pattern will get a lot warmer starting mid to late next week. Meanwhile, blizzard conditions will develop in Iowa tomorrow night through Thursday with wicked winds of 60 mph and possibly higher in gusts. Actual temperatures will plummet to sub zero with wind chills of -30 or colder. Here in OH we will get rain until Thursday night or Friday when the Arctic air will rush into the area.

My father used to joke that when Sam Houston defeated Santa Ana at the Battle of San Jacinto he should have taken it all and we could now be living in Acapulco, Texas……. 😊

At -10F doing 65mph It was predicting 265 miles. I did around 20 miles and its seemed accurate. Average consumption at steady speed and mildly hilly terrain was averaging around 520.

At 38F and 90% SOC my range was showing 300 miles. I have the 450+ with 21" AMG wheels. The loaner I took on a 700 mile road trip had the 20" wheels and a range in excess of 370 miles at similar temperatures. The temps are dropping even in the once-warm South and I am hopeful that warmer times will show that the 21" AMG wheels with Summer F1s perform as expected.

I have the same configuration, and was getting around 360 predicted miles at 80% charge in mid-summer in San Antonio. Now it is closer to 300, with Winter temps. Yesterday, charged to 80%, which predicted 319, but by the end of my block yesterday morning, that was already down to 301. Have I told you that I hate Winter?

Hear, hear! We in Georgia also aren't as used to the freezing temps! I will experiment with range over the next few days as I have to drive in for call Saturday. I expect estimated range to plummet as we have wind chills to -6F.
What has your experience been with the 21" wheels? I have noticed more noise than the 20", a low drone above 50 mph, which must be attributable to the tires. Everything else is so quiet that I notice, but didn't in the loaner with 20" wheels. I am thinking of changing out the summer tires at the next rotation for a different brand to see if that makes a difference.

I have 21's, with Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics (fifth generation). I have had no problem with the tires, don't notice any excessive noise. My car is very quiet. I'm generally not a Goodyear fan, but these tires are performing well, at just over 11K miles. I'll probably change to Michelin PS4S when these need replacing.

Im sure that will hurt your range significantly. I think the F1 is a great choice for how this car is actually driven. Its really not a track car and tires are not going to change that, its too big, too heavy to ever feel like a bonafide sports car. In fact its dynamic performance is amazing for what it is. Ever seen "Sonderklasse" on raceway?

I hope you are wrong, but respect your perspective. My 450+ handles similarly to my previous M550, with less acceleration (since I only have one motor). Not a track car, but very capable. My M550 came with the original F1's on it, and the PS4S were a significant improvement for the M550, with no impact on mileage for that car. Not an EV, I know. No need for a definite decision now, I'll ultimately decide when I need to. Hard for me to understand how a tire could make that much difference. But I'm studying it. Thanks for the opinion.

Everyone says 21 inch wheels have a negative impact on mileage, yet I got 4.6 mpkWh on the way home from the golf course today with my 21 inch wheels and temps around 58. Owning an EV is a definite learning curve! My mind is open.

One omission on my recommendations:Close the glass roof curtain!Sounds odd, but true! When its really cold (note: Im bald) that glass seems to radiate cold (I know cold doesnt radiate). Closing the curtain eliminates that "cold spot" very effectively. Another quirk about the EQS is than in auto there is virtually no hot airflow from the center vents. It all comes from the bottom and the round side ones.

Also bald and noticed the same thing. Curious how the heat distribution on auto works. I understand many don't like having air blown directly into the face (my wife is chief among this cohort), but would figure the auto setting would be able to utilize some passive, direct flow from the center vents in order to increase cabin comfort more quickly.

Your post certainly triggered me to do more research. Interestingly, I have found nothing which suggests the Goodyear Asymmetric F1 version 5's which I have on my car are EV enhanced tires. Indeed, Goodyear (at least on Discount Tire and TireRack) is advertising them as ultimate performance summer tires, to compete with Michelin PS4S, Conti Extreme contact, Perelli etc. Are there different versions of this Goodyear F1 tire? Got any links for continued research? Thanks.

Again they're MO, whether optimized for low rolling resistance I dont know. They are however "skinny" for their duty. 265. The LM 005 are very skinny 235s, Im sure to remedy their inherent very high rolling resistance.BTW don't think I think PS4 s are a bad choice I will probably get then when my F1s are done with. On my E43 I did the sae thing it came with Pirellis. Compared to the michelins they were more fun to drive but ultimate traction was lower. PS4s are like velcro. They are also comfortable and commendably quiet. The pirellis were superb on the track they were extraordinarily predictable and great in a slide. The PS4 were a little dull in comparison but they have so much grip that I never pushed them past their limits way too fast for contemplating a slide. The E43 did not have enogh power to ever break traction in a playful manner given its non deafeatable AWD.
