Another very cold weather " quirk"

The car sat in the parking lot at sub-zero temps all day today (-7F). I ran the cabin preconditioning before leaving for about 10min. Despite having about 80% SOC, the power was limited to 90%. Apparently, when the battery is fully cold soaked, It will limit max power.

I means the battery is at very cold temps through and through. I think this winter Mercedes will get all the data they will ever need about the operation of the car in extreme cold conditions. Im going on a road trip tomorrow (about 120 miles round trip) in the tail end of storm Elliot. It should be a good test of range in the worst conditions possible; way below zero, wind, snow and so on. Woohoo!

I have a couple facts I would like to share on this thread. First of all, a lot of people have a misconception about wind chill. As an example, let’s assume the actual temperature is -10 degrees Fahrenheit and the wind makes it feel like to -40 F. That does not mean that your exposed skin will cool to any colder than -10. As far as the car, battery, or any non living thing is concerned, the only thing that the wind will do is bring the temperature down to -10 faster than if there were no wind. It will NOT get any colder than -10.

The other thing that really irks me is the sensationalization of the weather on national news broadcasts. The past couple of days I kept hearing that this system is a once in a generation event. That’s such incredible BS. There have been many events like the present one (or even more dangerous with snow and cold) that I and many of you have lived through. So many times, the news leads off with a stupid weather event.

You are absolutely correct. Wind chill is simply an equivalency measure. It is important because it estmates how fast something will cool. For example if the windchill is -40 your skin will suffer frostbite as if the temperature were -40 instead of what the temperature really is. It even matters for objects since they will cool that much faster, like the bridge that frezzes over before the ambient temp actually gets to 32 degrees.

We are having the coldest holiday weather in 27 years. I expect low temps at my house to be in the lower 40's and in the 30's a couple of miles inland. Right now it is 67°F here. Our heat is running and we're wearing our warmest clothes. Brrrrrrrrrr.

I have wintered in SE Florida for the past 7 years since I retired. We get a couple of cold snaps each year. I think I’ve had to turn on the heat about 4 times in those 7 years.
And I too remember being in Disney years ago where it got down into the mid 30s one time.
