Eqs wheel & tire switchout 450+ sedan
mine came with 22’s from the factory and pirelli’s. May be time to switch tires soon and considering switching to 20’s for better range and maybe a more cushy ride. i can coax 400 miles out of her now with careful driving. I see some reasonably priced oem 20” wheel and tire sets for sale online. My nube question: is switching out the tires and wheels a plug and play type deal or more complicated. Would you only trust a benz dealership to do it or would a place like firestone suffice? What is a ballpark cost of the installation? Anyone know a good installer in austin?
thanks

I am not expecting much difference in mileage with the smaller diameter tires. Even though the 20" tires are 10mm narrower than the 21" tires, the contact patch happens to be 8.9" wide on both of the tires. I did find other 275/45-R21 tires with a wider 9.3" contact patch, and those would probably reduce the mileage compared to my current 21" tires.
The 21" Goodyear tires on my SUV have a tread wear rating of 500 compared to an 800 rating for the 20" Pirelli tires. In my case I will get a maximum of 24K miles out of the 21" tires if I run them until the wear bars are reached. I am hoping to get twice that mileage from the 20" tires if I rotate them frequently (every 4000 miles). This should reduce the cost of tires from about 10 cents per mile to 2.5 cents per mile. I only rotated the 21" tires at 6000 miles and 15000 miles and the difference in wear from one tire to the next is significant.
The lug bolts on the EQS SUV are 65mm long. I would recommend using wheels with a "297" prefix in the part number for your EQS sedan. It took awhile for me to find 20" wheels with a "296" prefix (EQS SUV chassis number). Using wheels with a prefix that matches your chassis number guarantees that the wheel offset is correct and that your existing lug bolts will work.
I’m curious how much of that range loss is all season vs run flat.
