outside mirrors - Convex
 

I live in US and noticed that outside mirrors on European cars, are both Convex where in US only the passenger size is a convex. My question. What does the vertical line on the outer part of the glass signify. Both the US convex and the European convex seem to be the same except for the dotted vertical line.
