Hello all.

My ML350 with 144K miles has developed a rattling/ticking noise when warm in idle when I put in D or R. The noise goes when RPM is increased. Also when engine is at normal temp 80C the noise will be come and go intermittently at idle in P and N.

I have changed the following

Water pump
Power steering pump
Belt tensioner
Alternator
Harmonic balancer
Check trans fluid - correct level
Idler pulley
Serpentine belt

Noise appears to be coming from lower front of engine in vicinity of harmonic balance pulley ??

Noise is still there with serpentine belt off.

Ihave not changed chain tensioner but will do next week.

Someone suggested torque converter and associated parts as a potential.

I have searched all the threads that pop up discussing similar issues but can’t seem to find anything to help. Maybe I have missed something.??

Any help or ideas appreciated !!

All, I’m not sure if you remember my starter issues but I need help. Last month, I went out to the truck 2000 ML320 and it would not start. It acted like it wanted to crank for one second then turned off and would not start back. Mechanic said it was a bad starter. Replaced starter and drove it home.

So, after having it back a day after original starter replacement, I went outside started it, ran back in the house and attempted to restart it and it wouldn’t start. Mechanic said it was a bad starter out the box. Starter smoked and wouldn’t turn off until it fried itself.

Replaced this one with a brand new Bosch starter. Went out today and it did the same crank for one second turn off and won’t recrank.

Highly doubt it’s the immobilizer or I’ve gotten another bad starter. Something is causing these starters to go bad. Has anyone dealt with this? It’s driving me CRAZY.
