I’m looking for some help diagnosing an issue with my 1996 Mercedes-Benz S320 (LHD). I’ve owned the car for several years now. It only has 160,000 km, has never been winter driven, and is overall in very good condition. It also doesn’t get driven much.

Up until last year, I never had any issues with it. While driving one day, the ABS and ASR lights came on. The steering became noticeably heavier, but cruise control still worked and the car never went into limp mode.

Last year I tried diagnosing the issue with no luck. So far I have:

Replaced the brake light switch

Installed a new battery

Verified the alternator is charging properly (over 14V)

Checked the resistance/ohm reading on the front left wheel speed sensor

Everything seemed to check out. Oddly enough, the problem went away on its own a couple of times last year.

After taking the car out of storage this year, the same issue returned. I recently bought one of the cheap 38-pin OBD1 diagnostic readers (button and LED style). When plugged into socket #6, the LED stays lit immediately, which I understand may indicate a closed fault.

Tonight, while trying to diagnose further, I ran into more issues:

Emergency brake light came on

Brake pad warning light came on

Speedometer stopped working completely

At this point I’m wondering if these problems are connected somehow — possibly a wheel speed sensor, ABS module, wiring issue, or something else.

Does anyone have experience with this type of issue on a W140 or know what I should check next? Unfortunately, I live in a small town and there are no local shops familiar with pre-OBD2 Mercedes vehicles.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
