Has Anyone Removed the Blue and Grey Side Molding on the G580?

I recently removed the side molding from my G580 since I was never a big fan of it. My truck has the Night Package along with all the standard G580 features. Added 295/40R22's After getting the vehicle PPF’d, I made a few discoveries—most importantly, the truck looks incredible without the side moldings! Even after installing the black AMG G63 kit I purchased to replace the factory trim, I still love the clean matte look with a side molding delete.

Here are some photos showing the evolution of the build. I also swapped out the front-end star and badges with matte or glossy black replacements for a more cohesive aesthetic.

The final phase of my retrofit will include installing a front brush bar and possibly replacing the grille. If anyone has upgraded their grille, I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
Would love to hear from anyone that has attempted installing a Brush Bar or Replace the Grille on a 580. Yes, I know both are going to be challenging.

I have all the part numbers for these MB parts, if anyone is interested.

Hi ,

I'm also intereseting in replacing my blue and grey molding with the all black one.
And replacing the MB logo on the front grille with the black glossy one.

My other desire is to replace the design box with a spare tyre. It would be interesting to have an adapted spare tyre cover to store the charging cable. I'm not a fan of the design box

Can you provide the part nr u used on yours?

Thanks

Here are the mods to my G580, in case anyone's looking to replicate the G63 look or do something similar.

🔧 Step 1: Decide on Your Style

The first choice is whether you want to go with the standard G63 look (with reflectors) or a cleaner, "blacked-out" version.
  • Standard G63s have orange and red reflectors at the corners.
  • If you’re going for the Designo Night Black Magno G63 look, the side moldings are all black with no reflectors (aka "reflector delete").
🧩 Understanding the Parts

The side moldings are made up of two components:
  1. Protective Strip – Matte black, non-glossy outer trim that attaches directly to the vehicle.
  2. Ornamental Molding – Glossy black trim that fits inside the protective strip. Counterintuitive, but this is the inner piece.
Pricing:
  • 8 Protective Strips (OEM): ~$400
  • 8 Ornamental Moldings (OEM): ~$2400
  • 3M Double-Sided Tape (Optional): ~$7
  • OEM Reflectors (Set of 4): ~$40
  • Black Reflectors (Amazon - iJDMTOY): ~$66
  • Aftermarket Protective Strip (eBay): ~$150
  • Aftermarket Ornamental Molding (eBay): ~$120
🔄 Configuration Options

Here are the three main setups you can go with:

1. All Black, No Reflectors (My Setup)
  • 8x Protective Strip (OEM)
  • 8x Ornamental Molding (6 OEM, 2 aftermarket to cover reflector gaps)
  • 3M Tape (if needed)
  • Note: OEM ornamental molding leaves a 6-inch gap for reflectors, so you'll need aftermarket trim to cover that if you delete them like I did.
2. All Black with OEM Reflectors
  • 8x Protective Strip (OEM)
  • 8x Ornamental Molding (OEM)
  • 4x OEM Reflectors
  • 3M Tape (if needed)
3. All Black with Blacked-Out Reflectors
  • 8x Protective Strip (OEM)
  • 8x Ornamental Molding (OEM)
  • 4x Smoked Reflectors (Amazon - iJDMTOY)
  • 3M Tape (if needed)
💡 Tips & Lessons Learned
  • Be cautious when buying parts from eBay or Amazon. Many aftermarket moldings are for older G-Classes and won’t fit. The inner ornamental molding for 2024/25 models is 11mm wide, whereas older models use 14mm — they are not interchangeable.
  • I tested OEM and non-OEM parts, bought multiple sets, and did all the removal and reinstallation myself. ( this is a totally doable DIY )
  • My final setup: OEM Protective Strips, reflector delete, 6 OEM + 2 aftermarket Ornamental Moldings.
I documented everything and have photos of all the parts and install process. Happy to share details, recommendations, or pics if you're interested.

Feel free to PM me if you want to chat further or need help with your build.

Hope this helps someone out!

I'm looking for a reay cable box if anyone wants to get rid of theirs

@wagon44, thanks for the amazing write up! I'm looking just for 2 aftermarket trim to cover parts to fully delete the reflectos like you did I did this on my 2019 but ended up buying the whole OEM part from russia. lol This seems much cheaper and more reasonable. Where did you source those from? I found the black out reflectors but not the full length trim parts black.

Thanks!

This was a real challenge! I eventually found the full-length inserts and the molding on eBay. You'll need to message the sellers directly and ask whether their inserts are 14mm or 11/10mm. It took me three separate purchases to get the correct ones, and I’m still not sure which seller actually got it right. That said, it was still cheaper than paying $2,400 at Mercedes. I think this is the seller that worked—but I’m not 100% sure. Please confirm with them before buying. This one!

One doubt. Do I have to buy the ornamental molding since I have the original ones? Or only the protective strips?

Another question, can you give me the number for the black MB badge on the front grille? How much did it cost?

I had the same questions and the answer is? How handy are you? Removing the Ornamental Model from the original vehicles protective strip is challenging and I made the determination that it was not possible without damaging the protective strip. I tried all of the common techniques, but ended up deciding against. You'll have to make a choice.

As far as the star, I do not have the MB part number for it. I took the advice of another user on this forum and bought this, link, from eBay. You'll need to remove one of the center plastic prongs from the inside of the star. Super simple and fits perfectly like the OEM.

Cheers.
