Traded my 17 G63 today for an 18 G63. I like old school
Today I traded my 2017 black on black G63 for a 2018 G63 in designio white, with black interior! I just like the old school look better and don't care about better milage, electronic screens, or handling etc! Thats just me! No offense as the new unit will be very nice. The black 2017 I had was a great looking unit, but after 30 mins of driving it was dust city. This one looks clean after a day of driving! lol I like that! The other thing I noticed, is the new one seems a bit smoother in the ride. I am not sure if they did retune of the shocks and springs, or a computer upgrade to control the suspension. But its very noticeable compared to the 17. Same tires brands and same rims on both models. Running the same pressure!
The one thing I did notice for the change and the main reason for my post is these small things. It does have the contrast stitching. I couldn't order that for my 2017! It as well has the dynamica type steering wheel with the squared off bottom. That was another option I couldn't get on my 17. But the one interesting thing that I noticed, and it is not a factory ordered item, was the hook hangers for the rear cargo net. My 17 had a set of the hangers in the ceiling above the back seats on each side, and another set of the hangers behind the back seat on each side.
I had a dog type cargo net that would hang there if I wanted it to. The 18 deleted these hooks it seems, in both positions! And where the hooks would normally be above the back seating position, there is now an extra set of grab handles. Just like they have in the front. I thought it was interesting they would change the headliner a bit, when the 18 was the last model year before the new units came out. I have my cargo net for sale in the adds on here now. I was thinking of putting the metal type of cargo divider up that clamps onto the headrests. If anyone knows where to buy one and if they are nicely made, please let me know! I have seen pictures but cant find a seller as of yet!

Congrats! it looks superb in white Thanks for sharing your observations too. I was wondering why there were no hangers in the back cargo area at all, I just assumed they were always like that.

Congrats- looks great. Especially like the interior. Ive also ordered designo white for 19 but since I plan to keep it for a long time, not sure if itd look old after few years. I think colors Like grey, black etc are ever green colors...

car looks amazing. it will be interesting to see how the old body style ages over time. MB has done a great job of introducing the new version to the point where i'm largely convinced i will be getting one. may just keep my 2010 but for lack of a parking spot...

Thank you, and I went over it with a fine tooth comb. Thats the only thing I could find. And thank you for the information! Appreciated greatly! I actually found out that the unit is made by Ergotech. They have you measure it up to a diagram they have on their site and get the right one shipped to you. And way way cheaper than I have seen!

I know colors can be trendy somewhat. But I think in the G you are pretty safe! Now my dealer did have a 2018 maroon looking G63 on the lot for sale a couple of months ago. I did not like the color and he said it would be harder to sell. But it sold after about a month! I was told blacks and whites are the easiest for resale. And designo paint in them colors is still good!

Thank you! I agree on your statement! Time will tell! My feeling is they are so iconic, that they will be cool for a long time! The dealer that took mine on trade said its about 50 50 on old vs new demand right now! They had an old Range Rover on the lot. It had the European driving position and the roof rack. Totally looked like a Rhino chaser off of a movie. And that ole thing brought 80K. They said the clutch in it was so heavy you need a pretty strong leg lol

We traded our '16 G550 and a '17 G63 and we took delivery of a new 2018 G63. We too just love the classic, real G-Class. No doubt the new one will do everything "better", albeit it with less soul.
If you did not notice, Mercedes must be trying our some new parts for the all new 2019 G. Look at the pillars in the front, passenger and driver side....2018 has new airbags, not there for 2017!
Also, the very rear windows...first time they are flush mounted! No rubber molding holding them in place. Even the G-Class Shop Foreman (we are lucky, one of our Los Angeles MBZ dealers actually has a G-Class specialist) was floored when I showed him the rear, exterior windows. He actually said...A be damned!!
Parking brake has a more connected feel too, less play! And the hood mounted, flush 3 pointed star is black. Other year Gs....traditional silver or silver/navy.
You are not imagining the ride. The 2018 G63 is much more poised and less rough than the '17 G!

I like the older one, that looks like you could push a Rhino by the butt out of some tall grass! I don't think the 4 liter has the low engine roar of the 5.5 from the videos I have heard. More power, but less growl! A tuner could easily fix the power part if a person wants huge power! As well, I like the older models LED light strips under the lights, rather than the current rings around the new models lights. The new model to me looks like it drove through a cloud of happy gas and came out pie eyed!
Now this is my opinion and it's no big deal. We all like different things! The new unit is going to be great, but it's not what I envisioned for my liking is all. No disrespect to the current unit or people buying it! I am happy for you all! It will be better in many ways!

YES! The all new one (2019 model) incorporated with the round LEDs...screams Jeep Wrangler to me!
New brush guard (Moose rack) is a joke. The dual digital screens in the cockpit....looks like an 80s Eldorado or Knight Rider, LOL!
When I had my '16 G550, the 4 liter V8 is a great engine, but it is weird that the new 550 and 63 will both have the same engine!

I agree with your statement 100 percent about soul. The new unit will no doubt do everything better. But I do not care. I don't like all the electric dash stuff, or the soft look of a Cube meshed with a Compass. The soft interior with the silver vents. The brush guard is a whole other issue.

And you are correct on those changes. I never noticed that stuff. Very interesting and thanks for sharing! Yes that is exactly what I was thinking on the headlights and brush guard. We are just old school lovers!

NO one, including me said the 2019 would not be a good drive. I even said it would probably do everything better!
According to our dealer, 2019 Gs will come with dual screen LCD screens. As of now, it "seems" one might be able to order w/o dual screens, but this has not been confirmed.
Not bashing the 2019 at all. I love new things, but there are so many other cars and suvs that can be cutting edge and hyper modern. It's just my opinion the G-Class should not be one of them. That's all. No need to get all ruffled

The gauges even without the added on bigger screen lcd, are still lcd! The round analogue types are no more as far as I know! If they had the same gauge option of the 18 it would change the whole dash! I as well said the new unit will do everything better. But I agree with Deutsch100, with less soul! Its ok to have an opinion and to be respectable about it. We both did that! I appreciate all autos. They are all feats of engineering. The 19 is gonna rock for many!

Analogue gauges are standard, even for G63. Yes they are pure analog, not anything funky in between. As I said, I have the dealers order guide

My mistake on that part than. I assumed that part was a pure screen. I was wrong and admit it. I actually like that set up much better. Thanks

I like the set up MUCH better with analog instruments, BUT...our local dealer (and they are a major G-Class seller, they currently have 127 G63/G65 in stock :-O ) told us that they will order all new 2019 G-Classes with the dual digital screens. So if someone gets one with analog instruments, then it is either custom ordered or a dealer likes the analog look better and placed the order!

Anyway, I think it's great that members like/love their G's no matter the year, but why don't you gents think the '19 won't have any soul? Does the front axle define the G? Is some level of austerity required? Won't it still be a quirky vehicle with an unusual driving dynamic that will never cater to the mainstream driver? Just curious about member's thoughts - not trying to start a '18 vs '19 war.

I won't miss the departure of the LED strips. I think '19 headlights look cleaner, just as they did on the pre-2012 G Classes.

The 19 G will (thank god) look like a G...but it will be softer, smoother, more refined, all "digitaly" inside, über luxurious and will drive more like a GLS (not a bad thing!!!), but not a G!
I also do not like the 19 headlights. I just think Jeep Wrangler when I see them (even though I do not even think Jeep uses these round led daytime lights)...but there are so many aftermarket lights that look like this.
I also despise the rear headrests that the 19 G will use. I had them in older ML/GL...and you have to physically move them up when you have a rear passenger. If you leave them up...they stick up stupidly high!
I think the all new G will for sure alienate dyed in the wool G-Class fans, but there are A LOT of people with $ that will have to have it because it will be Mercedes' all new, $$$ premium SUV! We all KNOW the 19 G will sell like hotcakes, since the old G still sold very well after decades of being produced!

I have said it several times, and will openly admit I do believe the all new 2019 G-Class will do almost everything better than the 2018 and older Gs! But, the current/old G is like unlike anything on the road. I always say a RR Phantom and a G-Class are the two cars (911 probably too) that you just know immediately and they are so insanely unique and the feel and quirks are so endearing.
