W463 Air Vent/Instrument Binnacle Squeak
 

Hi all,

I own a 2018 W463 AMG V8 (1st Gen) and am suffering from a squeaky instrument binnacle behind the steering wheel.

If I push/pull or move backwards and forwards it squeaks, like a plastic/leather on plastic rubbing sound.

I could take to the dealer but generally like resolving these sorts of things myself, whether by tightening things up or using some felt tape.

I'm trying to work out how the instrument binnacle is held together. There are a couple of screws on the air vents for the windscreen behind the binnacle, do these need to come off? They are so close to the windscreen, I'm not sure how I would unscrew them, is there a special tool to get into these?

Sorry you have this. I have this exact issue, but thankfully it is intermittent...but it will do is basically on every very bumpy or uneven road. Luckily smooth or smooth-ish roads and my G is very quiet. I can also push around manually and almost recreate it, but I have not told the dealer about it, since I agree they are average at best with these things.

I had a rattle/vibration that was driving me nuts for 2 months (I got my 2018 G63 in June 2018). I was convinced it was the driver's dash or even driver headrest.....but it was the sunroof above the driver's side. Well, not the actual sunroof, but where the sunroof meets the headliner. Several treatments with clear lithium grease spray....gone :)

I wondered if it was a common problem and researched the forums but didn't find anything, I see that it might be!

The other problem I had was that the Comand screen was rattling. I solved this by tightening up the unit. There are two screw covers on the back of the unit that can be pulled away. These two screws hold the unit onto its stand on the dash. There are two more screws which hold the actual stand on to the dash too. I tightened all four of these and the rattling went away.

The squeaking instrument binnacle is driving me crazy though!

The squeak is the leather binnacle cover rubbing against the plastic windscreen/shield vent cover attached to it next to the windscreen/shield. There are some screws holding these parts together but they are too difficult to get at given that they are sunk low into the gap between the vent cover and the windscreen/shield. I've tried sliding some felt tape in-between the leather and plastic parts though so I will see if this resolves it.

Can you send a quick pic of exactly where you slid some felt tape in? I have LOTS of felt tape, LOL. Thank you!

Will do. The good news is that my felt tape has cured the squeak! I'll take photos tomorrow.

Here is hopefully where you can see I have some felt tape, its a close up of where the plastic vent cover rubs up against the leather.

I have the same issue on my W463 G63 2013. It has been making this noise for over 6 years and driving me crazy. I tried the hood bushes and I am sure it’s coming from inside the car. I will give this a go! Is it just a matter of sticking some felt down between the leather and the plastic vent covers?
