2019 G550 New Front Bull Bar

Has anyone else noticed how the new 2019 G bull bar partially blocks the top part of the 3 point Mercedes star? It almost makes it look a little like an aftermarket piece of kit. I think Mercedes “had” to do this because if they raised the bb up just a bit to clear the top of the star, the top horizontal tube would be smack dab in front of the forward looking camera. I wonder if Mercedes was way down the road on their design schedule when they learned the brush bar would be a mandatory DOT requirement in USA, thus they were boxed in. Too late to redo everything, such as rethinking the camera location, etc., thus the partially blocked star.

Don’t get me wrong, the new G is a gorgeous beast (or I wouldn’t have ordered one in the first place), but that bb just looks a tad bit Rube Goldburgish, what with its partially covered star.

I’m assuming you’re talking about G550 not G63

I really doubt the bull bar is a US DOT requirement, but more likely an MBUSA marketing requirement. Since the MB Star has gotten so big, it’s probably pretty hard not to cover up some portion. Anyway, I, along with a few other forum members, hope to remove our bull bars after delivery.

Both. The bb appears to be the same on G550 and G63, and both have the identical issue of top part of star being covered.

You could certainly be right about there being no US DOT requirement for a bb on G550/G63, but I thought I had read this somewhere on this site. I could certainly be wrong, though.

The new bb appears to go down through the top of the bumper to secure it to the frame. So, if you were to remove it, wouldn't this leave 2 big holes in the top of the bumper? I also wonder if the vehicle's firmware for vehicle sensing, etc. would get impacted, or even the camera angle, and so on. Could be a lot of collateral issues with bb removal. Maybe someone has a contact at Mercedes to ask about this. I would think a lot of US owners will want to do this, so at some point perhaps someone can coax MBUSA to address this, perhaps something akin to a watered down version of a service bulletin.

Filling the holes left by the bull bar should be as easy as finding the MB part number for the covers that comes standard on the European G’s that don’t have the bull bar installed in the first place.

I don't see any holes on the Euro bumpers. I imagine it is a different part number. Give it time and the aftermarket will have some good options...

Is the front dot thing above the symbol a camera? Mine doesn't seem to have a front camera it only shows the rear and I don't see cameras on the side mirrors either?

Yes, that's a camera and the mirrors got cameras as well.

Strange that you don't have them.

I believe there are adjustments on the right side of the camera screen right after you put the car in reverse or when you push the 360 view ..

It still shows the back even when its in D. In my GL it moves itself automatically when you switch from R to D.

I would visit the dealer at the earliest, it doesn't really make sense to have a nonworking camera.

The G550's DO NOT come with front cameras, it's not even an option they offer due to bull bar. Only the G63's will have the front and side cameras so you can have real time satellite 360 view from top. This is why in the G550 you will see grid lines around the car when you are in reverse as in the photos posted. I inquired abou the 360 parking camera when we ordered the G550 and could not spec the 360 camera in the US, I was able to order it for my G63 due in this spring.

Sorry forgot to add that the "dot" on the G550 is just a parking sensor.

Thank you, I was just going to ask about the dot on the front.
The camera on the G63 is amazing.

It never crossed my mind that a feature that has been around for so long wouldn't be included on this car...

Has anyone removed the bull bar off their 2019 G550? Does it come off the same as the G63?

Yes, I had mine removed to powder coat it. Remove the plastic caps located just below the vertical component of the bull bar and it will reveal 2 vertically oriented bolts per side. Remove the bolts and the bull bar lifts right up. There are 2 additional bolts/nuts holding the vertical and horizontal components together.

Hope this answers your question.
