Rear hatch interior lights don't turn on when rear hatch is open

Rear interior hatch light doesn't turn on when rear door is open:

The rear hatch light turns on when other doors are open or when we press the light button up-front. But the light doesn't turn on when opening the rear hatch door.

Edit: The doors also lock after the rear hatch door has been open for 40 seconds. So it seems as though the signal isn't getting through, and the truck doesn't know when the rear hatch door is open.

Anyone have a quick fix?

Update:

Took it to a local independent MB shop with a scanner. He determined that none of the modules were giving any error signals. So it most likely wasn't the switch.

He then saw how the black tubing carrying the wires from the door into the trunk area was pinched. He cut it open and tugged on all of the wires, but none were loose.

Some of the wires were bare in spots. In fact, while taping everything back up (a temp. fix until he opens the door panel), the SOS call system was triggered.

Apparently a part in the rear hatch door is attached to that system, and most likely a broken or bare wire triggered the call.

So, most likely it isn't the switch but the wires within in the tubing got bent and pinched too many times over the course of opening and closing the rear door.

The mechanic said that this is a common problem.

Anyone else experience this issue?
