2018 G63 Engine oil grade and frequency to add

I have about 6500 miles on my 2018 G63. About 1000 miles ago, the message came on to ADD 1 QT. of oil. I bought a Qt. at the MBZ dealer and added it. I now cannot remember the grade, and it is not in the written manual or in the Infotainment loaded manual. Anyone know the recommended G63, MY2018 oil?

Engine runs at the optimal temp, no warnings, no error messages, no drips in the garage when parked... butanother Qt. in 1000 miles? This ok? This was the case with all our V8 BMWs, but never have had this with our last four G63.

Thanks.

A quart in 1,000 miles doesn't sound right to me. Maybe in the first thousand because of break in but I wouldn't sit still for a quart every thousand miles. If that is the case something is not right. Back to the dealer to get on record early. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

I just got off the phone with my local MBZ dealer, where we service (Mercedes-Benz of Encino). The Service Advisor says AMG/MBZ say that if no oil leaks...a Qt. every 1000 miles is in factory guidelines. I told them I drive 99% of the time within the speed limit, and I never heavy throttle accelerate (well, a little on the freeway onramp ;)

Btw, they told me to use Mobil full synthetic 0W-40 oil. SA told me his C63 takes 1.5 quarts every 1000 miles :-O

The Service advisor is probably right. The higher performance AMG engines probably do consume more oil because of build tolerances. I remember my air cooled Porsches consumed a quart per 1,000 miles like clockwork...and that was described as "normal". So hopefully you are OK. It does make one nervous though.

2018 G63. I'm at 4000 miles. Needed a qt around 3000. Had a couple of C63's and they were pretty thirsty too. I think it's the engine. Although I don't speed in the G I do drive it around town in a lower gear to keep it torquey.

So factory guidelines is to add 1qt every 1,000 miles? Hmm didn't realize that was normal

Personally I doubt it needs to be every 1000, that's a bit too often. I'll top it off when it asks me too.

We have two 2018 G63s, and both have asked to have a Qt. of oil added. We bought them in June of 2018, and both have under 7000 miles. So... 2 quarts in about 6500 miles is less than every 1000 miles, so the dealer told me 1000% normal, although it is perfectly acceptable if a Qt. is used every 1000 miles.

All of our V8 BMWs and our 3 Porsche 911s DRANK oil! I mean, we used to keep it in the trunk, because they were so THIRSTY :)

I do wonder if MBZ changed something with the MY18 G63?

We had a 2014, 2015, 2016 and two 2017 G63s...and not a single time did we ever have to add oil between service appts. With both our 2018 G63s...we need to add oil.

This cannot be a coincidence!!

That's interesting. Especially since you had every model year. Same oil each year?

Actually looking back...we had two 2016 G63, in addition to the 14, 15, two 17s and now two 18s. I do not know what oil the 14-17 used/had...since we never needed to add oil in between A or B Services. I do know the 2018 G63 takes full synthetic Mobil 0W-40 European car formula :)

That's the only thing I can think of. On a separate note, a bit off topic, what are notable differences between the MY18 and all the others you owned? Any noticeable improvements, or basically the same?

2016 seemed to get upgraded suspension compared to all our past Gs, dating back to the early 2000s; of course not air suspension, but 2016-2018 G-Classes has "softer", or slightly more comfortable suspension. From 2016-2018...lots up little changes and upgrades here and there & each model year....Navi screen, dash buttons, COMAND buttons, added airbags, flush/rubber free rear side windows...

LOVE the G!!!

My '04 has done this twice over the last 14,000 miles. I've only had it for a little over a year and put the last 15,000 on myself, so I have a limited history to base it on. I honestly assumed i was because the vehicle was older and had over 100K miles and was just burning oil.
