G63 W463 pulls to the right
I got a used G63 AMG W463 with slightly over 20k miles. It pulls to the right.
The dealership service originally acknowledged the problem and attempted to fix this a few times and failed. They told me they will not attempt fixing this anymore.
The original problem was: to drive straight on a highway, I had to keep the steering wheel to the left ~10 degrees. When the wheel is let go, the wheel straightens and the vehicle drifts to the right.
After the dealership "fix": the steering wheel sits to the right ~10 degrees. When driving straight at a highway speed the steering wheel is straight [but with a force from me], when let go the steering wheel sits 10 degrees to the right and the car still drifts to the right. Continuous fighting the steering is obviously exhausting on a longer trip.
I heard a number of whys from the service dept:
- This is a G Wagen, what do you want?
- This is a former military vehicle!
- They all do that!
- The road is slanted to the right to assist with drainage
- Sir, you are not supposed to let the steering wheel go while driving
- etc
Somehow, I know it's a bunch of BS.
I am stuck with a crooked steering wheel now.. ** sigh **
The car is still under warranty and I would like this fixed.
What are my options?
Thanks for your reply.
The alignment, tire rotation, balancing, tire pressure checks were performed 4 times. One of these times it was done outside of the dealership service. The tires are brand new too.
At this point it's hard to continue assuming that the problem is alignment related.
I suppose I will take your advice and take it to a different dealer service.
I will update the thread soon.
Try another dealer, you might be able to straighten it out more but don't expect a perfect ride. G's are crawlers, far from highway cruisers. On long highway trips I often find myself wresting with the beast, which is why we picked up a sedan. Now we only drive the G in town.
Aside from worn bushings, sagging springs, or blown shocks (which shouldn't be an issue for your relatively new truck), alignment and tires are usually the issue.
There's got to be a reason for this. If alignments, bushings and tire balancing can't fix it, take it to a collision shop and have the frame alignment checked - maybe it got tweaked sliding into a curb or hopping a rock.
Once I stopped trying to fix the problem, it really was not noticeable!

I took the vehicle to MB of Austin.
They mostly fixed the issue (90%) by installing "shims".
I took a two-hour road trip on Saturday.
The car still has an ever slightly noticeable pull to the right but is drivable now.
I can now glance at my watch without involuntary changing lanes.
There is hope for your G Wagen too.
NOTE: MB of USA customer advocacy was useless and wasted two weeks of my time.
