G63 Tires
For the owners who own the new G63 and live in cold weather regions where snow and ice are parts of their winter driving lives, I wanted to get your thoughts on the tires on the G63s.
I just got mine a week ago and didn't think to study the tires too closely out of pure excitement. My wife brought to my attention that the tires are Yokohama Advan S.T's which are rated as summer tires and Tirerack.com specifically states "Like all summer tires, the ADVAN S.T. is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice."
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....odel=ADVAN+S.T.
I can vouch for the Pirelli Scorpion Zero's which were the tires that came on my 2011 G55 as I went through deep snow and ice in Vermont with the car with no issues. They aren't winter tires either but they were all season tires (not much better but still better than summer tires).
Just wanted to get people's thoughts on this and whether this is a concern to anyone who expects to use this vehicle in the winter no matter how much snow one might get (like me).
I live in NYC and we had our first snow already which in my opinion means it's going to be a rough winter especially considering how lucky we got last year with only one snow fall on Halloween for the entire season.

On a totally different topic, I'm considering doing a "plus-zero" tire upgrade on my G63 (when it arrives) from the stock 275/50R20 to 305/45R20 Yokohama Advan ST. Goal is to improve cornering traction and braking distance. Does anyone have any thoughts on the pros/cons of such a change?

....another option is General Exclaim UHP 305/45/20 and 305/50/20. All weather high performance tires. I can vouch that the General exclaim UHP are excellent tires. I have used them for years in various cars. They are just as good as the big name tires, but they just don't have the high price and the high name profile

Though a different vehicle I had a G ordered but canceled due to wait time and opted or a Cayenne turbo that came with Pirelli summer tires. Luckily I bought a set of Pirelli ice and snow and they performed magnificently in our recent nor'easter.
As you know your summer tires are zero traction in winter temps and weather issues.

So finally going to bite the bullet despite the bad taste in my mouth and purchase Pirelli ice and snows to replace the ridiculous summer tires on this car for a few months.
I've been told by a few different MB service people that it may not be necessary but others have said definitely need them. So I'm playing it safe.
Anyone else do this already or plan to?

Don't cut corners when it comes to safety. The MB service people who said it's not necessary are top class idiots. AWD is nothing without proper grip. I lived in North America for several years and always had Ice & Snow tires on all my cars during winters. The rubber compound composition is completely different and therefore, so is adherence to the road. Be safe, not sorry.

We've got the first snow in Chicago,my wife's G63 was absolutely undriveable on stock tires, could not stop or turn.
Replaced them on Friday with Pirelli Scorpions Winter and Ice,same size as stock and it is a day and night difference.
Have to take it back to dealer on Monday though, they forgot to balance the wheels properly,it seems........

Funny thing is, as I was sitting waiting for the car to get done, a guy came in for delivery of his g63. The salesman mentioned the weather we were expecting and said to him, "yeah the cars here are going to have trouble, but your car will go through anything!" I walk outside to look at his g63 and it has the stock summer Yokohama Advan S.T.! I cannot believe that these salespeople know so little about the cars and give a customer who is spending upwards of $135K (his was more cause it had the PA6 interior package) false confidence. I hope this guy didn't go play in the snow yesterday cause I could only imagine what could happen.
I personally still think MB got it wrong with these tires on this car, they should have come with all-seasons like previous models.
Out of curiosity, for owners in the US, did anybody's dealer/salesman give them a heads up about the stock tires being summer performance tires?

When I asked the GM and Sales guys about it, they seemed genuinely surprised.

Same response as you guys got. Said these are all season tires, fine in the snow.

Good luck with the truck. Other than the tires I think you'll love it. Maybe we will see each other around the city. Mine is black on black with the black 5 spoke. Soon to be the Magno night with pa6 in black (getting that in March)

Does anyone know the offset for the wheels on the G63? I am debating ordering new all season tires, new winter tires, or ordering a new (cheaper) set of wheels with winter tires dedicated for my winter driving. Thanks!

FWIW depending on where and how you'll be storing the set off-season rims plus tires in 20" is gonna be heavy.

I was thinking keep the nice OEM 20"s on these summer tires, and then get a cheaper set of 19"s for winter. That would help not wear out the Scorpions.
Less hassle of having to have the tires unmounted, swapped, and mounted. But would take me probably 30 minutes to change all of the wheels too.
OR, MB could have just supplied all season tires.

Decided to go with the Pirelli Scorpion Snow & Ice in stock size for the 20" OEM wheels. Figured easier to deal with and can wait to pick up cheaper alternative winter wheels down the road possibly. $1,428 on Tire Rack.
