Is a 2016 G63 suseptable to cylinder wall scoring

I am in the process of buying a 2026 G63, Under 70K miles.

I have seen a some info on the S63 having cylinder wall scoring due to the coating used on the cylinder and the piston. I believe these coatings were improved sometime during the 2016 model year on the S-Class?

I have had a E550, that I think had the same engine without the turbos, it did not have any engine issues.

Is Cylinder wall scoring a concern on a 2016 G63?
Is there a rough idea of what percentage of vehicles is affected?
Is there a build before/after date available as to when the coatings were improved?

Thank you in advance. I did do a forum search and did not find what I am looking for.

If there already is a thread for this, please point me to it.

I personally wouldn't without an extended warranty. I've heard of some updates, but my belief is all m157 engines have the potential for this issue. I had a 2014 M157 engine and it happened in cylinder 5. It was about $10k warranty repair.

There are some CPO 2013-2018's G63's and G550's I've seen floating around, maybe try to find one of those. I prefer the 2019+ M177 engines.

Thank you for the reply.

I have spoken to the dealership that has maintained it since new and they stated that all services have always been done on time.

I know that this is no guarantee, but I hope this at least stacks the deck slightly in my favor.

A 2019 is not in my budget right now.

I will absolutely reply to this thread if the motor is an issue in the future.

Yes. It uses the scoring-prone M157 engine.

I wouldn’t touch this engine.

If you decide to touch this engine (I advise against it), buy a warranty and hope it covers you and that you don’t go through an arduous claims process, and are without access to the vehicle for an extended repair period.

hopefully I get lucky.

If not, maybe an LS Swap is the right answer.
