Exclamation Aftermarket Nav System could kill you if installed wrong

I was talking with my friends and the most random thing came up that I never thought about. Where you place your nav system ie TomTom or Garmin aftermarket units could be fatal in an accident.

I have moved mine all around most of the time kept it on the left of the speedo (on an left hand drive car) just to keep my line of sight open. Sometimes its on the right for the passenger to navigate. But I rarely put it in the middle.

In a crash the airbags that virtually encompass us could project that device right into our heads at unimaginable speeds.

Does anyone know a position on the window that would definitely not be touched by an airbag? Possibly right around the rearview mirror?

You have the point.

A couple of years ago, I got pulled over on the highway I-10 near the border of Arizona and California. I was not speeding, but the office told me my radar detector in the middle should move to left of the speedo (on an left hand drive car) just to keep my line of sight open (just like you mentioned).

Now, my Garmin GPS is in the middle. We will see what a police officer is gonna say if she / he pulls me over.

Mercedes has already figure that out for you, Since most of their cars come with infrared glass, there is cut out in the middle of the windshield offset to the right for radar placement where the glass is not treated, this spot is barely visible and is indicated in the owners manual.

It seems to me that mercedes would not put the spot there if it were going to interfere with the airbags.
