'72 -'75 450SL Pricing

I've been looking to get an early (1972 to 75) 450SL convertible. I'm wondering what the main pitfalls might be for those model years. Most of the ones I've seen for sale have anywhere from 80k to 150k miles on them. And the pricing seems to be all over the map. (e.g., I've seen '78s with only 80k on them that sell for $8,000, while a similar condition '73 with 110k on it goes for the same price). I realize part of that is just the vagaries of the market (and some sellers -- and buyers -- are smoking crack).

Is there any semi-reliable source of fair value on cars of this age? I'm obviously new to buying "vintage" and don't want to make any big mistakes.

Thanks
