on the way back home (after 700+ miles) a message came on saying "check engine oil level at next refueling". So I stopped a few miles later and checked it. But it was fine. I was really about to be upset as I had just added 2 quarts prior to leaving home. To date I have added 4 quarts and have only 7500 miles on the vehicle and there are no leaks. I hope the oil consumption issue will go away after about 10K miles.

4 quarts of oil in 7500 miles on a new vehicle is not normal and I doubt the situation will change after 10K miles. I would take it to the dealer and get a check on it and a full explanation on what is wrong.Originally Posted by EFant

You mentioned adding 2 quarts prior to going on your trip and then checking it after 700 miles and everything was fine.
I would check the oil the next time prior to driving it(cold) and then upon returning. Perhaps you have a drainage issue as 4 quarts in 7500 miles isn't right.
As a side note, too much oil in the crankcase will also lead to oil consumption.
Either way, you should have it checked out by the dealer.

Have it checked out by the dealer but also, MB considers 1qt / 1000 miles as acceptable and operating to manufacturers specs. Not just MB, Audi and BMW say 1qt per 1000 miles is acceptable.
Some new cars will consume some oil when the engine is still breaking in and most will be fine after 10,000 miles. But have the dealer check it out and they might do a oil consumption test.

This thread on oil consumption got me worried as we have had our SL550 for about 7 months now (2300 miles).
Just check it and oil level is right in the middle of the indicator
Do hope the dealer finds the problem with your GL.

i had the same problem. took it to the dealer where they did a consumption test. there was no problem. they re-calibrated(or reset or something to that effect) the sensor and that fixed the problem.
Thanks guys, I'll have the dealer take a look.

I'm assuming you haven't had any services done yet. Have you ever checked the oil since you bought it? It seems that MB underfills the crankcase sometimes on the Alabama plant products but this should have been caught when the PDI was performed.

I am just curious about how you drove during the first few hundred miles. Lots of babying or normal driving??Originally Posted by EFant
