GL450 with 22" OZ (pics)
Finally got the shipment from Tirerack.
I'm using 285/35/22 Yoko tires. The ride quality is about 20% stiffer than the factory 18" wheels but the handling is much better than the stock.
OZ really make good quality on the wheels. No rubbing too!
Needs to get the car lowered next week.

Looks great!
From the side view, it sure looks like you're driving a 550, now that you've got those rims with the running boards.

I agree with Commander. It looks real sharp and at first I thought you did put on the AMG wheels that are standard on 550. What wheels are those?
And, THANKS, for posting the pics.

I love the look also and really wanted to do something like this. However, I was concerned that I would be buying new tires more often than I'd like (a lot less rubber on the road), so I guess you could say I took the practical approach and kept the 18's while buying aftermarket chrome wheels. I agree with the others who said your vehicle looks like a 550 now. Looks great.

Tire rack sold you the wrong size tires. You need 285/40/22's. With 285/35/22's, your speedometer will be reporting your car as going 3.52% faster than it is actually traveling. At 60 mph, your car will be registering 62.1 MPH.
I really like the look of the OZ Canyon ST rims. Did they use your TPMS off the stock rims? The only thing that is keeping me from buying these OZ rims is that they are very very heavy at 46.2 lbs each. A rim that heavy is going to effect your breaking distance and hurt your fuel mileage.

Looks great. I have always liked the OZ Canyon's and considered 20's but feared the possibility of a harsh ride or the tendency of wider tire to follow groves in the road. Glad to hear the ride tightened up without harshness. Have you had an opportunity to compare the ride/handling of your GL with a 550? BTW does your 450 have the off road package?

The stock wheel size is 275/55/19's.

285/40/22's are the correct fitment and they will have a more protective sidewall to boot.

Edit, his GL450 looks to have had the 18's stock. The stock tires on his car were 265/60/18's. When you do the calculations from the 265/60/18's to the 285/35/22's, the new size will still be off by 2.17% or at 60 mph the new size will be reading 61.3. It's not a huge difference but the 285/40's are the closer fit and will have a better sidewall.

With all that said, .73% is well within the manufacturers guidelines so you really have nothing to worry about. It was a moot point that was based on the calculations of the aspect ratio and rims and not the manufacturers specs. It has persuaded me, for the time, not to put 22" rims on my GL. I would be worried that the rims would be damaged too often with such a heavy vehicle and a low aspect ratio. AMG got it right with the 21's.
You car does look sweet. Keep us informed of any bent or broken rims.

Using your own calculations and not the calculations based on the tire aspect ratio and rim size, you are still incorrect. His speedometer would be reading faster and not slower as you stated. It would be reading 60.44 since the newer tires rotate 5 more revolutions per mile, according to your figures, and thus would cause the speedometer to read faster than he was actually traveling and not slower.
