Dropping Headliner and Satellite Radio Problems

About 6 months ago my Sirius Satellite radio quit working. (Yes my Sirius account is still active). The radio display simply indicated "Acquiring Signal.." with no results.

My dealers service department ran full diagnostics on the Satellite radio and could not resolve the problem. Apparently everything checked out as "OK", despite the fact that the satellite radio would not work. They indicated that they had sent a technical query to MB asking for help. The Service Mgr did indicate that they might try to replace the antennae for the satellite, but that this would require the headliner to be dropped and that they were uncertain if this would resolve the problem. I indicated that I was not keen to have the headliner dropped as I had that done once in my 99 ML (for sunroof problems) and the vehicle was never the same after. (Always rattled and headliner never seemed to fit properly after removal).

A couple of weeks went by and I rec'd a call from the Service Mgr indicating that MB was working on a resolution and that they had a couple of other owners with the same issue. According to the Service Mgr MB indicated that this was a known issue and it was caused by a stray voltage surge (their words) that knocked out the Satellite radio.

I followed up with the Service Mgr 3 or 4 times over the following months and each time was told that no solution had been issued by MB. They did agree to reimburse me for the cost of the Sirius subscription that I had purchased, but could not use.

Fast forward to last week - The Service Mgr called me and indicated that MB has determined that the antennae for the satellite radio needs to be replaced. again, to do this, they will need to drop the entire headliner in the vehicle. The Mgr indicated that the headliner drop is not a big issue and that it will come back "good as new". I have my doubts. I am so negative to the headliner being dropped (based on past experiences with my ML) that I may decide to live without satellite radio and opt not to have the repair made. (assuming that this repair will, in fact, fix the issue.)

So my questions:

1) Has anyone else experienced this Satellite radio issue? If so, what was the solution?

2) Has anyone had the headliner dropped in their GL and if so, what were the results? Did your GL still feel like new after?

Thanks for any insight.

There is currently a TSB for satellite radios. Hopefully, they will fix your radio properly.

How do I get a copy of that TSB? I want to try to confirm whether the headliner needs to come down to make the fix.

Thx DieselDoc - is there any place you know of online where I can see a copy of that TSB?

I guess it's the one dated Oct 14, 2008 and numbered S-B-82.60/638

You can get a 1 day subscription to Startek for $18 (US) and get all the TSBs you want.

Great - Thank-You, that's what I'll do.

Turns out that if you're from Canada, you can't gain access to Startek to download the TSBs (Can't use a Canadian based credit card).

Anyone know if there is an equivalent location to access TSBs in Canada?

I know this is old, but has anyone else had this issue?
