Diesel fuel consumption trip last friday

I picked my wife up at JFK intl airport Friday night and paid attention to the trip indicator.

110 mile round trip
Avg 50mph
28 MPG

I would take this all day even with a 5% variance

WOW...very nice. Even my E-class has 24.5 average on a trip like that.

Granted, I reset the trip indicator while I was on the highway. The trip was 99% all hwy at 68 to 70mph except when I ducked into airport parking. MPG actually goes up when speed was between 50 to 60 mph.

These are very good numbers for such a big and heavy car like GL.

Of course it does, since drag increases with the square of speed.

We just completed a 650 mile trip last Saturday at an average speed of 71mph. Consumption was 23.6 mpg. Of course it was helped by the 32 mpg we got for the first 70 miles coming out of the Keystone area down to Denver, but regardless 23.6 mpg is pretty awesome given the size/weight of the GL and the speed I averaged.

They are wonderful vehicles for sure, but then I get 35 mpg in my E-class on the same trips I get 25 in the GL.

I can probably get 40+ mpg in a Jetta TDI or zero fuel on a bicycle. Your point is? Oh wait... you usually don't have one.

He already told me driving my 550 was a chore.
