Airmatic Malfunction Warning

Bummer, our 2011 started giving us the airmatic malfunction warning. It goes away when you restart the car but eventually returns. Anyone else with this issue? Car drives the same.

You either carried something crazy heavy that it blew out the airbags. Or air is leaking out of the airbags. Lastly, you might of drove through a really bad pot hole very fast which could of caused the airbag/airbags to blow...
Take it into the dealer.

They will replace it for you if your car is under warranty. I had to have this done in my 08 GL and for 4 airbags, it was about a 6k fix for MB. Glad my car was under warranty...lol

Interesting. You think the malfunction warning is related to the airbags? I assumed it was for the airmatic suspension. Dealer is picking up the car this week so let's see what they come up with.

At first visit, dealer could not reproduce the problem.

The warning seemed to go away for a week and now is back. Noticed a small oil drip in the garage. I wonder if the airmatic is leaking.. Any way to tell visually?

I just purchased an 08 GL550 and after a week of owning it my front airbag suspension gave way. No errors on the dash about failed suspension just "Compressor cooling down" error. The GL is at the dealer as we speak, its been there for 3 days. Luckily i bought an extended warranty since i purchased it with 60k miles.

Dougpark, did you get a final on the problem. I have an '08 GL550 and at 76k miles my front end dropped after the "Compressor cooling down" error. I paid $1,427 to replace the compressor and valve. Then 4 days later it was down in the front on one side. The dealer said it was now the airbag, and that would be another $843. Anyone any ideas?

Arnott industries and a good local independent car mechanic.

Airmatic Malfunction

Today-

My 2008 GL450 got "Malfunction" warning message. Car is still under warranty... hopefully it is covered. I am attaching a screenshot of the warning. Can you guyz post your experiences? My car is @67k miles and warranty will runout @75k. This incident wakes me up to look for extended warranty.... Any good references for a legit Extended warranty company? Please advise..

Thanks

2009 GL 550 airmatic malfunction - no air leaks

I get the malfunction indicator after about 20 minutes of driving on the hi way. Also if I try to use the off-road setting it never reaches full height and the compressor eventually overheats and shuts down with a compressor cooling down message. The car does not lose ride height when parked for several days. Is it possible for the valves to be stuck, preventing the air bags from fully inflating? How does the valving system work? Is it a common failure point?

you have a crack in the compressor reservoir or the compressor piston ring is worn out. the pump works overtime to maintain regular height, but doesnt have enough oomph to raise to offroad when requested. this is a very common problem. this can be confirmed with star/ das compressor test.

sagging at rest is a leaky shock(s) or valve block, so yours are good and consistent with what i wrote above.

After having my GL450 (09) for 3 weeks I got the same "compressor cooling down" I replaced all 4 with Arnott parts, and including compressor the kit was around $1500, and another $400 for installation.

Is the issue being solved? My GL350 is facing the exactly same problem. Can you please share your experience with me?

It was already covered. It needs a new air compressor for the suspension.

Mercedes Benz E 320 2005
please help mee....

Hey i have 2005 e320 w211 chassis. I began having airmatic suspension issues. I took it to independent guy that has done work before super nice and accredited. He replaced the brass valves and air lines. large bill.. then i drove it and airmatic message came back on. i thought maybe it was nothing then noticed car sinking again didn't want to have to tow it again.

So I took it back. decided it was rear air shocks. Went online purchased the shocks at big discount. took it to him and he replaced them. No more loosing air. Then the message kept coming on he drove it then he said the compressor died..

I went online bought a new compressor and Hella relay. he replaced it and then he said it was fine.. i drove it for a day for work put around 150 miles it drove like brand new.

I started my car this morning and saw again the infamous visit workshop with arrow pointing up saying I'm basically screwed... please help me I have spent so much money and i need to get this resolved so i can just have no extra expenses for a while this has been broken for like 5 months please please help me..

The only thing left I think it can be is the valve block or front air shocks.. only thing that hasn't been replaced...

It has brand new tires and put all this money into it I cant sell it and get nothing for it.. I probably couldnt even get what I have spent on the car in the last 18 months.. I need it to last at least 24-36 months with only 125k miles and new suspension it should be fine for at least that... these cars should go 200k miles no problem... please help me.

HELP PLEASE

Hello
Did you solve your problem?
I have the same issue on my 2008 GL:
Changed front and rear air struts, compressor, valve block, relay and fuse. But the aromatic malfunction message keeps coming up randomly. And randomly rear air bags in pair deflate ( I exchanged them twice). Rise function works well and car stays in raised position entire night in my garage...

most of the information in this thread is 5-7 years old and you may not find service at that price point any longer.

Take it into the dealer.

They will replace it for you if your car is under warranty. I had to have this done in my 08 GL and for 4 airbags, it was about a 6k fix for MB. Glad my car was under warranty...lol

Hello can you share your number so that i could get all the details?

I had the same problem

I did a lot of YouTubeing/Googling with no good guidance. I finally bit the bullet and installed a new (Amazon $135) valve block and a new Arnott compressor (Amazon $450) and everything is back to normal and no Airmatic Malfunction warning message. On hindsight I expect just the valve block would have solved the problem.
the vehicle drove normally for several thousand miles but finally the front end did drop down too much so I had to do something.
