Upgrade from factory stereo Alpine X800-d ML

I am growing more and more frustrated with our factory entertainment system., but have not seen any viable alternative until this morning. Has any one had an experience with the Alpine X800-d ML? I see that Alpine lists this as drop in replacement for the factory head unit but no in the US.
I contacted Alpine US, but they would not provide any information for overseas models.
I have seen some no-brand Chinese made units online but I don't feel comfortable with these units.
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated

Personally, I'm after the head units that can accomodate the Apple Car Play and the Alpine does this (as does the Pioneer NEX series).

A $90 alternative:

I can vouch that this works well in my GL.

Thank you for the feedback I really would like a drop in replacement. The Apple Car Play option would be an added bonus. So far the only unit that I have seen was the Alpine. Do you know of anyone selling them in the states? Other options?
