Oil Reccomendation for 08 320cdi
I have 110k miles on the vehicle now, I bought with 73. I have been using the Mobil 1 5w-40 esp m spec oil and am assuming it was changed with it also at the dealership. I changed last week and was going to order more and found out that Mobil 1 no longer makes it. The reccomended Mobil 1 oil that meets the spec is the 0w-30. I kind of hate change, and have been used to running the 40 weight oil. I feel the change is for the newer vehicles and hoping the lower viscosity oil will be as protective. I am from Louisiana so it gets pretty warm down here. If i was up north would not be as concerned.
Curious what others think, I am assuming there are not many other choices in oil that will meet their spec.
Thanks
Steve

Check on line. Amazon sells Mobil I 5W30 Formula M for $108 for a case of 12 L bottles.
The viscosity isn't as important as the fact that is a full synthetic and the formula Mpart that assures it will not unnecessarily clog your DPF filter.
Full synthetic oils are MUCH more resistant to thermal breakdown than the old 'dino' oils. The fact that you are in Louisana is not something to worry about.

MB oil
You can get the MB branded 5w30 in 229.52 spec oil all day still. I am in hot Texas and have been running 5w/40 since new and did not want to run the 0w/30 in summer. I did an oil change over the winter with engine hot with the 0w30 and it was thinner in viscosity than bottled water!

MBWorld Fanatic!
Just picked up some parts at local MB dealership. Asked about oil. Current recommendation is the Mobil 1 0-30 (mainly because that's what Merc sends to it's dealers). But the most important thing is that the oil says "MB Approval 229.51" on it - regardless of brand. I asked about 5-30 and 0-40 and he said it's fine to top off with the stuff, but would recommend sticking with the most current recommendation of 0-30 for full oil changes for best performance of the DPF.

After much discussion and searching. I felt the thicker viscosity 5w-40 that Mercedes reccomended initially would be best. Finally was able to get the castrol edge turbo diesel for about $10 a quart. Had to have a local oil distributer special order it.
Was going to also mention the oils I mentioned earlier other then the castrol are no longer available.
So for anyone wanting a 5w40 that meets the 229.51 spec this is a good option.
