Thank you for the article. I haven't received anything from MB USA or my local dealers where the vehicle has been serviced.

I was in the dealer yesterday for another repair and asked them to perform this recall repair while they had my truck in the shop.

They declined.

They are aware of the airbag recall, but they will not do anything about it yet - they don't have proper guidance from MBUSA. They called it a "pending recall"

I called about other service I needed performed and inquired about when I could expect a letter referencing the recall. I was informed that it would most likely be months.

So, so far as a new member I've found the quick reply bites. I typed a full reply and scrolled up before I posted, and my post minimized and disappeared! What a terrible "feature"!

So that said, I'll try to recreate my first post, but pardon my brevity and slight frustration in this version...

As I was trying to say.. I am considering a GL class (diesel) for a family vehicle. I have a wild idea to replace the truck with a GL and get a trailer and this will serve as the family ute and truck -with the trailer.
Some research on this forum and on others is that the earlier X164s (2007 and 2008) use the TRW airbags, while the latter years (2009-2012) use the Takata "pipe-bomb" airbags.
Given that I am a heavy DIY-er, I want to ask:
What are the chances that the TRW aribag from the 2007-2008 will fit in the later year vehicles? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but my thinking is that if they are the same platform (X164), the airbags should be interchangeable. -Right? -Or am I just thinking crazy?

Here's an example of what I found:
A TRW passenger airbag from a GL450

Would this wild idea work?
If so, one could have the non-explosive airbags of the 2007/2008 with the more modern features and comforts of the 2009-2012.
In all actuality I think the 2008 is more of my bag. I would still get a spare instead of the DEF. I think 2009-2012 had a DEF tank instead in this location, and reintroduced the spare in 2013. That said, I cannot afford a 2013 until it depreciates more, so my theory is posed.

I finally found a way to fix this. At the very bottom of the webpage (if you can get to it -because it is initially set to infinite scrolling), there is a dropbox. I changed it to "Classic NextGen", from the default "Classic NextGen -Infinite Scroll".
Now that I have that fixed, I find this forum very easy "standard" to maneuver around (This VAG guy has got to get used to some new forums!)
-Thanks for the help Bob.

After scouring around the few other threads there are on the GL, and all of the other threads on the MB forums, I think I'm out.

It scares me that I haven't received a single reply on this topic yet, and that I cannot find but a few DIY posts for things like headliner replacement, wheel bearing replacement, control arm or suspension service and replacement, timing chain replacement, etc.

I'm not trying to start a VAG vs MB war here, but it gives me comfort that the Volks and Audi forums have hundreds upon hundreds of DIY service threads and how-tos.
It really scares me that all I can find (generally speaking) in the MB forums are wheels/rims/photos/bolt-on accessory threads and general complaints that usually seem to end with the owner taking the vehicle to "the shop". Nuts to that. I do my own service. And I'm not into servicing my vehicles every weekend.

I also take time to post other tips and how-to's when I do a service, too, to add to the community. But seeing as how the MB DIY community is basically null, and I don't have all the time and money in the world to R&D and be the first one to start these topics, I'm out. -Yes, I know, there are a few folks out there who seem like they are a wealth of knowledge, but they are few.

All that, and it seems the GL (and many other Mercs) suffers from some bad engineering choices, from my research. It looks like there are a few over 100kmi, but I'm looking for a dependable family hauler that will last well over 300kmi. Noticing now how I don't see any GL vehicles for sale over ~120kmi gives me an indication that this vehicle is not worth owning.

Again, I'm not trying to start a war here, and I'm not trying to give the MB crowd the a figurative slap to the face. I'm just calling some things as I'm seeing them -from my perspective, at least.
Although, if this post offends a MBWorld user enough to comment, I might actually get to communicate with a competent, DIY MB owner!

So all that said, I think MB is out for me. Wish it weren't so.

Hi Eric,

I didn't intend for this (apologetically, a bit of a rant) to come off as incessant whining and complaining, I'm only trying to reason my decisions and share them publicly, in case there are others such as myself trying to decide to take the MB plunge -specifically with the GL. I know MB can make a quality product, and all manufacturers tend to have their weak points with one vehicle or another. It may seem like complaining due to sheer length of my posts; I tend to be more of a long-winded typer -because inflection is hard to show with written word. I do this to give some detail to my thoughts.
In a way, I was hoping my previous post would incite a rebuttal from someone to show how there is a vast DIY section somewhere I did not yet find.

I may still consider the GL, as it does look like a wonderful vehicle and has had a fair share of quite happy owners. I do realize also that most take to the internet to voice complaints rather than praises, so I'm sure that has a lot to do with what kinds of posts I see.

I also don't mean to derail the topic of this thread further.
My apologies.

If there is still a thought to the possibility of swapping the driver and passenger airbags from a later model x164 GL into an earlier x164 (2007-2008), I'm hopeful to hear so.
