Fog lights cut on and off as steering changed
IIRC the fog light on the side I turn the steering wheel towards cuts off and I straighten the wheel it cuts back on. Then when turn the other direction, that one cuts off until the wheel is straightened. As long as both wheels are straight both are on, otherwise not.
I notice this if parked in front a window and can watch, or have someone tell me what is going on. Not sure what goes on when driving.

It is winking at you. Maybe it likes you.
On a related note- are sure the fog lights don't turn on in the direction you steer in? Is you turn left and left fog comes on. Once you strengthen the wheel the same light cuts off after a few seconds. It is called "corner illumination" and can be turned on or off via star/ das.

Thanks I'll look into it. You would think at night they would both stay on
i really can't recall which turns on or off as the wheel is turned. Just that I rather them stay on. I thought corner illumination was the headlights actually moved as you turned in.
Why foglights cutting in and out at night is benificial beats me.
Thanks

They should be corner illuminating, meaning if you turn left it will turn the left one on to help you see, and it will go off shortly after you return the wheel to straight ahead. If it's working backwards, that's pretty odd.

I believe there was at least one model of GL/ML where they had corner illuminating lights. I think they are supposed to work like this (ie. they are NOT fog lights).
Read your manual.. maybe I'm incorrect. I have these on my S550, although on that car they are built into the headlamp assembly.

The lights that cut in and out are the oval lights that are separate. Located about a foot below the headlight assembly. I am calling these fog lights. Is it normal that their operation is controlled by steering position? Makes no sense to me but if so how can I disable

Yes, the cornering lights were integrated in my S class (into the headlamp) but I think on the ML/GL they were down at the bottom. They look like foglights but aren't.
They activate differently at certain speeds if they are what I think they are. For example under 40km/h or so, you need the wheel turned and turn signal on. Higher speed you just need the wheel turned (no signal) and they come on.
Look in your manual or find one online. The Euro models had a way to turn them off in the settings menu if I recall correctly.
You could probably pull the fuse if you wanted to disable them fully and there is no other way to turn them off.

on my 08 US gl i have cornering fogs
i can pull the switch out and keep them both on all the time
or i can leave the switch pushed in and they come on when i turn , with or without the signal on
and i havent noticed them being speed reliant, but i usually have the switch pulled halfway out and have them on all the time
guessing you dont have the owners manual for your truck?

Thank you,
I tried pulling the switch out, but that does not allow me to leave on the auto seeting, that is where it pulls back in.
I had seen some kits on eBay that have an aftermarket LED system that stays on all the time and acts more like driving lights. Are the newer GL's equipped with these corner illuminating fog lights or driving lights?
