X164 strange start issue resolved.
For a couple of weeks my GL would, sometimes, not start on the first attempt. Everything perfectly normal, no warning messages. That funny "pew" noise like normal but the starter just would not engage. Multiple times I broke out my trusty icarsoft reader and read no codes. Nothing seemed to be wrong except that it would not start on the first attempt. The wife brought the kids to school last week and the car would not start at all. No crank. She finally had to get the stroller from the back and walk back home with the 2 yr old. I tried the scanner again that afternoon and discovered a code saying something like Relay F58KD closes too early. After some research, I discovered that this relay is "D" "engine" in the engine compartment fuse box. I swapped it with the air pump relay to get home and got a new one.
Hope this helps somebody with the same issue someday.
Incidentally; There is quite the story about getting that relay from MB Barrie. The least reputable dealership I have ever heard of.

You are looking for the airmatic pump relay or the emissions air pump relay? The engine air pump is relay "E" in the engine compartment fuse box. The airmatic relay is also in that fuse box. Can't remember which letter.
Hope that helps

Interesting. While my 2012 GL350 was under warranty, I had a very similar problem which the dealer solved by replacing the ignition. Same symptoms; occasionally it would not start (or do anything for that matter) when the button was pressed or the key was turned. After multiple tries, it would eventually start. Realizing I was going to get stranded, I brought it to the dealership and let them deal with it.
