Tuning GL550 2011

Anyone tune their X164 GL550 yet? what software/company did you use? Any driving difference/performance gains?

20 hp. Not really worth while IMHO. https://www.renntechmercedes.com/ind...-405-tq-detail

I agree with BlownV8. $1500 for 20hp is a terrible ROI from a car performance perspective. If you were bracket racing weekly for money it'd make more sense. I think you're better off either getting an X166, then tuning it OR spend that money elsewhere.

i think www.eurocharged.com has a Tune for GL550s

DarthVaderpa 01-31-2019 11:39 AM

There are some options for tuning:
Stock 382 hp 391 lb-ft
weistec engineering M278 upgrade $1,499.99 540 hp 715 lb-ft
renntech ECU upgrade $1,490.00 402 hp 405 lb-ft
brabus B50 – 500 ? 500 hp 516 lb-ft
eurocharged GL550 biturbo $1,999.99 530 hp 606 lb-ft

:nx:

I used Renntech because their shop is close where I live. Just dropped the car and waited 2 hours. The results were quite impressive, response and fuel consumption improved from a poor 12-13 mpg to 18-20 mpg @ 80mph

renntech is the only one on that list for the X164 naturally aspirated engine. The rest of those are for the twin turbo in the X166.

You are absolutely right, all the upgrade but Renntech are for the twin turbo M278

can you feel the Difference in Power 20hp gain?

I can tell that the throttle response and torque were right they should be for a 4.6 V8. The fuel consumption improve a lot, from a poor 10-11 mpg to 18-20 mpg.

You have a 164 GL 450?

Yes, 2007 GL450

BlownV8 02-05-2019 08:47 PM

Strange, Renntech does not list a tune for the 164 GL 450 so wondering how you gained 20 hp from their tune?

quron_southwest 02-06-2019 03:07 AM

I think OE Tuning has a tune for the M273.

DarthVaderpa 02-06-2019 08:42 AM

The tune they offer is for the M273 engine (naturally aspirated engine)

So, just got off the line with Renntech, they do offer a tune on the 164 GL 450. They said it nets 20 HP and 14 TQ for $1490 plus $30 shipping and is loaded by a hand held tuner via the OBD port. If your mileage claims are accurate, it might be worth doing if you plan to own the car long term.

DarthVaderpa 02-06-2019 02:52 PM

I drove the car for about 47K after the tune. Just making a rough calculation with the tune I used approx 2800 gallons of premium (approx $6160 @ 2.2$ per gallon), without the tune I would use approx 4700 gallons ($10340). Roughly I saved 1900 gallons or $4180 over the past 2 year and 9 months.

quron_southwest 02-06-2019 05:10 PM

So are we talking about a M273 in the X164 or a M278 in a X166 i’m confused. The OP was asking about the 273... Or maybe someone else is confused. But, OE has a tune for the 273 for like $400 if i’m not mistaken for the 20HP gain.

DarthVaderpa 02-06-2019 05:30 PM

M273 in the X164. The OE tune cost $395 plus $240 for the flashloader. And you will have to have a Windows operating laptop.

So where did all this Biturbo crap come from?

You sure you don't work for Renntech? No way does a "tune" magically increase your mileage by 50%.

Now, possibly something was broken before, and someone fixed it (were you in limp mode?), which seems feasible given 12-13 mpg at 80. This makes a little more sense.

It does seem to me that if such an easy tweak were possible, MB would have implemented it long ago.

WinterPark321 02-08-2019 06:08 PM

12-13mph to 18mpg? That is very good!

BlownV8 02-08-2019 07:34 PM

I averaged 17.7 MPG for around 100k miles until I added the 22" wheels and tires. It took around 1.5 MPG hit with the 22's.

My long term combined mileage is about 18 on 18's.
