Is this normal for 4500 miles? the gasoline v8 should really not use much oil at all between oil changes when towing a 4k trailer (unless see above)... . the diesel can use up to 2 quarts every 10k miles even when not towing... a bit more if towing... and it is ok |

not normal unless conditions were harsh - outdoor temp over 90 degrees, lots of stop and go, steep and long inclines. etc...

Not sure what Mercedes would say about what is acceptable oil usage. Most car manufacturers have guide lines normally defined by mileage on what is considered abnormal oil usage, for example, like one quart every 3,000 miles is acceptable. I suspect yours is within acceptable oil useage range. If you change your oil every 10,000 miles, you only have to add one quart between changes. Thats why Mercedes have oil dip sticks. Or do like me aways change oil at 5,000 miles. Im old school and don't believe in going 10,000 miles between oil changes. MHO only Also, how do you check your oil. I normally check it in the morning when the engine is cold and all the oil has drained down. Just pull the stick out and check it , no use it wiping it then inserting it and checking it.

Official posture is up to 1 quart per 1000-1500 miles. Reasonable? No. But since you asked...
i would monitor oil level more carefully. Could have been a fluke, user error or a persistent problem. |
