clunking upon acceleration on driver side front wheel.

If it happened immediately, or soon, after that replacement... first place to look is the strut mounting (loose) or the strut itself being defective.

It's uaually the sway bar endlinks. They dott like their hibernation being disrupted by the strut replacment.

Some more specific detail might help narrow it down.
Is the clunking a one-time thing or is it multiple clunks? Does it happen pretty much on the start acceleration or just at a specific speed? Anything on coasting or deceleration?

Got it. Sounds a lot like maybe you received a faulty air strut. May be worth a look underneath to see if there is anything obviously loose, but the shop who did the work should definitely fix it for you.

It is more than likely the sway bar endlinks. These have a life of 60-80k.

BUT... wouldn't end links normally clunk over just about every bump all the time? That's been my experience, anyways. Not to say that they shouldn't be checked, of course. Don't forget to check the top mount - if that was loose, I could see how that could cause the issue.

Either the mechanic didn’t tie down something on reassembly or your cv joint is not inserted properly into the differential (c- clip is mangled) or the cv joint got disturbed and went bad. The first two are the mechanic’s fault. The last one is going to cost you some money (new cv joint).

My two cents, before replacing components make sure from where the noise come, go under the car and with a plastic hammer tap on every place there is a rubber mount or ball joint. I had a annoying clunking thudding noises and I found that the noise came from the differential.

Hi rejohn1, did you every resolve your problem? I know this is an old thread, but I'm having a clunking noise and it sounds like it's coming from my C/V joints, I only hear it when I have the airmatic in the raised position and as soon as I accelerate it kicks in with out turning, it did this from the time that I bought it (2010 GL450, 3-2021), I do not use it and until now I have not had a problem with it now I'm getting a grease leak from the front left C/V boot, and a roaring/humming noise from what I think is a left rear wheel bearing? but with this grease leak in the front that noise could be from there; I'm reaching out to KONIGSTIGER, (a premium member) whom might be able to shed some light on this noise??
THANKS,
JW

CLUNKING NOISE IN FRONT END,,
In my case it was the driver side CV-joint, in your case it sounds like you need both left and right, because you are getting the clunk L & R. I had the boot grease in my driver side fender liner, also my GL450 only clunked in the raised position;
GOOD LUCK;

that’s pretty unlikely that both your CV joints wore out at the same time - you got something else going on underneath the vehicle either in a transmission mount or slack transfer case chain. the sound is being projected to where it sounds like it’s coming from the wheel. chassis ears will be your friend to figure out exactly where the sound is coming from .
