Did you happen to do the stove test to the new stat to see how it functions?
Thermostats are rated for their start-to-open temperature:

So at sea level, a boiling pan of water would just begin to show opening.

How that translates to temperature stability depends on the rate at which the coolant is being moved, the rate at which heat is being pushed into the coolant, and the rate at which the radiator sheds heat to the environment.

If the pumping is fast, the heat rate is low, and the radiator is big and/or the ambient temperature is low, the coolant temperature will remain very close to the initial opening temperature.

If you heated oil on the stove, you could figure out the temperature at which the thermostat is fully open.

I did not test the new stat and sure wish I would have put them both in the pan together… back in the 70’s that’s what we would do to get the fastest opening 160 stat. Already had the gl put together when I thought of this!

Summary

The GL can idle now with AC on and not climb with crazy temps. The fan will stay within reason of 25%-35% and keep a nice 90-95 C sitting in the drive with 75F ambient INSTEAD of going over temp or at least saying it is?? Will post if and when the weather gets warmer but I happy and driving again even if I have my trusry IcarSoft hooked showing temps !

I bet it was the temperature sensor. The fact is you had temperature readings that did not match your probe. Keep the thermostat you pulled out as a spare.

It actually looks like someone ran a bead of rtv around this stat? Hopefully things will settle down and let me put some miles on it and quit spending $$ in parts !

I think that is factory. The thermostat is sold integrated into the housing. Why, is a mystery. As you figured out, it can easily be slid off the heating element.
