X166 Rear Brake Light Replacement

Has anyone tried replacing the rear brake lights on the GL with LED's? The non-LED's I don't like much at all!!

I know the bulb is a 7506 type bulb which would translate to 1156 in LED, but is there a reason to avoid it? And will it require a resistor?

There is a whole thread about it. I think the verdict is that the lights are part of a system board and can't be replaced.

Am I missing something here and are you both talking about two different things?

I see lots of discussion of rear backup lights and trailer brake lamps in the linked thread but I can't find a specific mention of internal brake lights.

I do see on in the Operators's Manual where one can easily self-replace brake lights (p. 140 of GL Operator's Manual downloadable from mbusa.)
