Engine Oil Cooler Leak
Has anyone with their GL350 had an oil cooler leak? I have a '14 and noticed some oil leaks in the driveway so I took it in this week and they kept the car for 3 days. Said they had to take the whole engine apart to fix it. Thank goodness all was covered under my extended warranty. Just wondering if anyone else out there has had problems like this. I have 75,000 miles.

Thanks for your response. Yes my Father in-law looked into it and said that it was a problem with the diesels back in 2010 having the leak, but they were supposed to have fixed the problem for the future with that new O-Ring. Clearly they haven't if mine is a 2014 make and leaked at 75K. We'll see if anyone else with the GL350's has any issues.

I just turned 60K miles on my '13 GL450. I have had multiple coolant leaks. Yes - I said multiple, and all in the last year.
I actually just took my car in to have a rear taillight bulb replaced and asked service to check the coolant since my "check coolant" light had come on again. Thirteen days later, I got my vehicle back. In checking the coolant leak, they also found oil intrusion in the engine and pretty much had to take everything apart. I have never had to buy an extended warranty before, but this one was well worth it. The bill would have been over $8500. ARRGHHH! I would be even more furious if I had not been given a loaner vehicle.

Oil Cooler vs Coolant leaks. Coolant leaks don't happen on the Bluetecs.

The leak is due to an O-Ring or due to the oil cooler seal/gasket?

I have a 2010 GL350 oil cooler seems to be leaking based on descriptions I've found regarding the oil I have leaking from the rear of the engine area. Does anyone have the instructions on how to change? I've been looking but haven't found anything clear on youtube or internet. Still searching... I'd rather do it then spend money with the dealer or indy.

Thanks for your post - your 2010 GL350 is series X164 - the series that preceeded this forum which is X166 2013 forward.
I suggest you check and repost in the X164 forum - keep the beat !

I found a youtube video back when my W164 Bluetec leaked. I thought I'd try to do it myself. In the video it took about 4hrs with a little help from a second person. You have start at the top of the engine to get to the oil cooler at the bottom of the engine. $1,800 job but I asked that the entire oil cooler be replaced for the hell of it. $2k out the door minus 10% off. Join the Mercedes club of America and save 10%.

2013 Gl350 47k miles. Got the dreaded oil
leak. Suspect it’s the oil cooler, but only because it happens to many others so frequently. Will take it in next week, have Mercedes ELW, so assume it’s fully covered. My question is;
1)since they will have extensive removal of parts to make the repair, is there anything I should consider having done at the same time as long as it’s all taken apart?
2)are the replacement seals better quality now that will not allow this to happen again? I believe I read on forum many repeat occurrences because the new seals are not much better than the original seals.
Thx

Replace the swirl motor for sure and just pay for the part. I also got a fuel injector leak a month after the repair. Techs have to climb up on the truck to unbolt the turbo. You have no idea what they step on as they lay a pad on the motor to "protect" where they walk...

I started noticing an oil leak when my wife's GL350 (2014) was parked inclined, not flat. Took it in to dealer today and they just advised me it was the oil cooler. Said it was a well known problem (nice!) and would cost about $5,800 in parts and labor (really nice!). Said cooler was $1,800 and about 17 hours labor.
I questioned how they know it is the cooler and not just the seals unless they took the engine apart? SA said he would look into that, would work with me on the cost and try to get me a loaner on Monday as they had none available today (Sat).
I wasn't expecting something like this. Car has 56k miles and is 5 years 2 months old!

Jason, South Florida, FLL area. I looked up the price of the cooler at MB Dealer and it says it is about $150 so I don't see where they get $1,800 just for the cooler? I'm waiting for the SA to revert with a updated price but for sure I have considered going to an Indy.

Lots of posts on this forum about oil cooler leaks. Normally it is the seal (bad material). Price is expensive because of labor to get at cooler/cooler seal. Just got mine done (53k miles). Except the oil cooler was out of spec (I think warped), so they replaced the whole unit. Thank god I have extended warranty, else I would have looked for Indy.

Call another dealer and get the price for an oil cooler leak and oil cooler replacement.
In my '10 ML, mine leaked. $1,800 in labor, $40 in gaskets. So I told them to change out my cooler ($210) too since I'm spending so much.
Also, I'm in the Mercedes Club of America so the $210 was offset by the 10% discount dealers give for being a part of the Club.

So the SA advised me today that the cooler is not leaking, just the seals. Still a major job. He doubled down on the $1,800 just for the cooler though, if needed. I told him I checked on line and they were only about $150 from various sources including a MB Dealer. Still no idea what the labor will be but assume it will be in the 16 hour range. One Tech working 2 days. Says the whole top end needs to be removed to gain access.
I'd love to get a copy of somebodies invoice for this job.

Seems high even for a dealer quote. I don't know what the customer pay cost is as most of the ones we do are under some sort of warranty, but even 16 hours at $180/hr it adds up fast.

Yes, I'm figuring something in the $3k+ range, before haggling with the SA. I suppose I should have sprung for the extended warranty, but car gave me "zero" problems for 5 years/55k miles. My first MB so I was really not expecting something like this. My 2010 BMW 335D was a different story. BMW took a beating on the warranty with that car. It came with 4 years/50k and I extended it to 6 years 100k as I recall.
Most likely I will trade this one in for a new or CPO next year once I get over this "bump" in the road. There is certainly a point of diminishing returns with cars like these.
I contacted a well known Indy near me to see what he would charge out of curiosity, but my car is already torn down and should be ready tomorrow.

Call/visit another dealer today and ask them if they can break down the cost to you preferably in writting. Then call MBUSA to complain (assuming the prices are how you describe)......after the work is done.
