folding 2nd row seats flat and locking

Currently looking at replacing my 2008 GL with a 2015/2016 model. Noticed after looking at a few the 2nd row seats don't go all the way down and lock flat like my 2008 does. My 2008 completely locks into the flat position and needs to be unlocked to raise up the seatbacks again. Is this a design change in the x166 model or is there a different technique needed to get them completely flat and locked. I have of course flipped up the seat bottom forward first and then folded the back down.

The 2nd row seats in my 2015 GL350 folds pretty flat but there is no latch or lock not sure how the X164 looks like but I am happy with mine with the added cargo space when it's folded.

The X166 also folds completely flat just like that.

They fold flat, just don't lock in the down position

What do you mean by "lock" in the down position? Those seats won't suddenly spring to life by themselves and go back to the up position all by themselves.

By "lock" I mean lock, like they lock in various reclined positions. From the original post I understood that on x164 the seat would go flat and lock in that position.

I do mean fold down flat and lock, not lock in up or reclined position. The x164 also has multiple reclined positions that lock into place in addition to locking completely flat down. In the photo here this is as far as I have seen the 2nd row fold flat in an X166. They are still on an upward slant and still feel springy at this point and do not appear to lock down. Seat bottom is folded forward out of the way. Reason for the question is the our dog sits there and a bouncy slanted seat isn't going help.

No locking mechanism only the little hump, you see in the pic, at the rear of the bottom seat and the pressure from the front seats both are holding those seats in a snug position. I doubt the 2nd row seat would come out of a flat position to an upright position unless the vehicle overturned.

Also, if the headrest are removed the seats will fold completely flat.

DC Benz, Thanks for the clue. The headrest!! I hadn't thought of that. I'll have to try that on the next one that I look at as the headrests are a bit different on the X164 and X166.

Note: If you have the automatic folding 2nd row option you may not be able to remove the headrest without modification.
