Question Question about new TPMS sensors

I just ordered some new 19" AMG clone wheels and all weather tires for winter use on my GL550. I also ordered some new Schrader brand TPMS sensors for the new wheels ($40 for set of 4). I called the dealer and they are telling me that any new sensors that I add requires programming. They want to charge me 1 hour of labor at $175 just to program the sensors.

I decided to call TireRack to see what they do regarding new wheel and tire packages that require TPMS sensors. The guy looked up my model and year and said that the instructions for programming the new sensors are in the owner's manual and that a trip to the dealer is not required.

I thought it might be a good idea to see if anybody else has been through this when installing brand new sensors (Schrader brand).

As long as they are the right frequency (433 MHz I think) no programming is needed. Just put the wheels on and restart the system in the menu. After a few minutes of driving the pressure values should be displayed.

The dealer claims this is the way it worked previously. But the newer models (2013+ on the GL's) require programming. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

I have a ‘13 and bought a set of used wheels with snow tires mounted that already had TPMS in them. I mounted the new to me wheels and just assumed the sensors wouldn’t work but a few days later I checked and they were reading the pressures fine. I did not have to take it to the dealer or do anything to them.

Do you have details of the Schrader set of 4 that you bought, was it the full kit including valve, stem, cap etc or just the sensor?

Thanks

Carl

They came with the stems and caps. $40 for all 4 and no programming needed.
