GL450 M278 bad cylinder

The M278’s are not aging well at all. I have maintained this vehicle to a tee. Mobil 0w-40 European oil every 7,500 since 54k. Talked with a MB corporate service tech and he agreed. Ditched it for a Toyota at 96k & hated to do it. My wife loved her 2014 GL450. Sorry if this is a repost, can’t remember which forum I posted it in earlier.

Sorry to hear. Good that you were able to transact into another vehicle. MB design = generally bad across the board.

M177 looks to be developing a reputation for rear main crank seal oil leak at <100k miles. All newer 4 bangers have fatal problems of one kind or another. Not a good era for MB.

Post Chrysler they are resting on their laurels and doing great dishonor to the German engineers that created cars “Engineered like no other car in the world”. Pre- Chrysler they made cars now, they don’t care about anything other than making money. Buy a Toyota, never thought I’d be saying that my friend.

Did you hear evidence of scoring before you scoped it?

I did not. It would give a random cyl. #5 misfire plus it never seemed to run very smooth (we purchased it at ~56k). I cut the filter apart at the last oil change and it had a few flakes of aluminum in the pleats so I scoped it and saw the scoring in cyl. 5. I didn’t check any others.

Thanks. I am original owner 2013 GL450 with 157k miles. I’ve recently noticed a ticking sound and occasional wobble at idle. Otherwise runs great and still 21 mpg.

Think I’ll check the filter tomorrow.
