GLS Rear HVAC "Auto" setting not persistent

GLS Rear HVAC "Auto" setting not persistent
Just wondering what other peoples' GLS rear HVAC behavior is.
My 2018 GLS550 -- When I start up, I can press "Auto" on the rear HVAC control and all runs fine. Shut down for less than about 3 hours, restart, and the HVAC is still on Auto. Shut down overnight though and the next morning "Auto" is not activated. So strange it holds that setting only a few hours. After an overnight, when I re-activate Auto on the rear HVAC control, fan spin up and blow briefly before settling down which leads me to believe it isn't just the indicator but the whole system basically wants to be turned on each and every morning. Kind of not ideal with kids.
So -- is this "just how it is", do I have a defective head unit, maybe a battery somewhere to be replaced?
