What services/tuning to perform at 80k miles?

Hi,

My 2014 GL450 is at around 80K miles now. I need to send it to a garage for some repairs, and plan to let them do some maintenance work as well. Other than oil change and some fluid top off, there has been no maintenance done since around 50k miles (I bought it used at around 50k miles).

What must-have/good-to-have maintenance should be done at this milage?

Transmission fluid flush/change? Brake fluid?

What else?

Thanks!

Routine oil change and filter every 5000 miles windshield wipers fluid brakes and tires if applicable

Cool! If you'd like to keep the truck long term, I would recommend doing the transmission fluid, brake fluid, transfer case fluid, and front & rear differential fluids.

Mercedes has service intervals for most of these items, but a lot of people have different opinions about what these service intervals should be. You can research what the experts say and then decide for yourself what to do with your vehicle.

I'll list the general maintenance schedule I follow below (tailored for turbocharged gasoline cars). I'm not saying this is correct - it's just what I have decided to do after doing research and owning German cars for 13 years. Some would say this is overkill (and they may be right), but it has yielded a 2013 GL350 with 202K miles and a 2011 BMW 328i with 160K miles that both run great:

- Oil change every 4K miles
- Transmission fluid every 30K miles
- Transfer case fluid every 30K miles
- Front & rear differential gear oil every 30K miles
- Coolant every 30K miles
- Spark plugs every 50K miles
- Brake fluid every 2 years
- Engine air filter every year
- PCV every 100K miles
- Serpentine belt/tensioner/pulleys every 60K miles

Some of the M278 owners on here may also have some great advice on what to look out for.

If your cooling system is still original, consider replacing some of the failure prone parts; at over a decade the plastic parts are going to be a constant source of unpleasant failures. Turbo coolant lines fail due to embrittlement of plastic fittings, the expansion tank to recirc pump hose (1168301400) fails due to embrittlement of plastic fittings, the plastic hose connection from the heater to the engine at the firewall (1669971459) fails due to embrittlement of the plastic, the lower radiator hose is a weak point as well, and lastly the expansion tank itself apparently has silica beads that like to rupture and float downstream, clogging the heater core. Fix them and hopefully you’re good for another decade.
