Question 21 inch wheels for GL 63?

I am soon taking delivery of a new 2015 GL 63!

I would like to get a separate wheel and tire package for winter.

Tire rack has the tires but can not guarantee any wheel fit.

Of the course the dealer would be happy to sell me OE 21s for a small fortune.

Where might I purchase reasonably priced 21s?

Also, does anyone have experience going -1 to 20s for the GL63?

20s off of an AMG ML (166) will be able to fit over the calipers and be the proper offset...... But you won't notice the difference in a pair of scorpion winters regardless of 20s or 21s.

Put the winters on your OEM 21s and purchase a sexier 21 for the summer...or go 22s.... Just remember u need XL load rating.

eBay is the BEST place to find some OEM take offs for much less than what the dealer wants. These rims seem to be from someone that upgraded their wheels when they purchased their car.

Snow tires

Thank you for your suggestions.
I ordered Pirelli Scorpion Winter in 21 inch.
I will continue to work on the wheel thing in the meantime.
These Pirellis are the only choice at tirerack.
They did have Pirelli Winter Carving as a second choice.
Last winter I ran with the Scorion Winters on my Audi SQ5 and they performed extremely well. On my first Audi Q7 I had Pirelli Ice and Snow tires. Those perfomed poorly. My last Q7 had Blizzacks and they were excellent. I was very surprised the Scorpion Winters. That's why there was hesitation on my pare to get these for my GL63. I would not go near the Ice and Snow's. I did see on line that there are Hakapillito 7 int the stock 295-40-21. I did not try to see if anyone had them in stock.

Welcome to the GL63 fold. I have the 21 inch Axis Allies wheels for my snow tires. They worked well last winter and were not expensive. I am pleased with the look for winter. I have a photo of the wheels on in the Selfie thread if you are curious.

Hmmmm, are you sure about that?

On my w166 ml63 the 20 inch amg rims with 265 tires makes all the difference on the snow. IMO the 21 amg rims with 295 winter tires are too large for deep snow.

But to be honnest I hope I am wrong so I could switch

btw Awesome gl63 respect!!

I have used the 21inch winter scorpions in 16 inch snow a number of times last year... they were fabulous.. that might be more a statement of the capability of the tire that outweighs the need for skinner tires using older technology. I really think that you will hang the car up because of ground clearance long before the "so called" larger tire penalty kicks in.

I have already installed my winter 21s and they give no penalty for being winter tires as far as performance on dry and wet compared to my 22 Scorpion zeros

Sadly, my winter wheels/tires are now on as well . . . Will also say I am surprised how well it handles with the snows (21 inch Pirellis as well) - feels pretty darn close to the stock summers.

Kind regards

I can't hardly tell the difference either... Though the 22s are a hair stiffer

Just a heads up the axis allies 21x10.5 have a wheel rating of 1796 lbs.

It has since been pulled from TireRack and you can probably get a refund if you really wanted to.

The fronts require 1,708 lbs min rated wheels based off the GWAR and the rears require 1,984 lbs. This is off my GL550 so suspect it is similar to the GL63.

The Avarus AV11 21x10.5 has a load rating of 2,200 lbs - so ended up buying those. The Avarus actually accepts the OEM center caps which tirerack doesn't mention. I run the Pirelli snows with these. There is quite a bit of room on the calipers so suspect your calipers would fit but I will not guarantee it.

I doubt you'll run into any issues even with towing - but still good to know (similar to using proper load rated tire).

I ended getting another set exact OEM wheels.

Advantage: Wheels will be covered under Mercedes wheel and tire warranty year round. Actually the winter tires are covered under the Tire Rack road hazard warranty. This may become a significant issue as it is turning out to be a brutal winter with new potholes daily.

Disadvantage: Price of OEM wheels.

I think that you are better off with the OEM/ Insurance.. you will always be able to sell them on Ebay.

I have been extremely careful with my new black rims but slid off the side of the road getting around a stuck State Trooper in Ct and I hit a rock.. it scratched my black paint on the wheels and I am so peeved... (when I took deliver of the 15 I had forgone the wheel warranty as it won't cover my 22s.. so I will be doing my own touch up!)

to bad you didn't consider the black wheels!

the wear and tear from the guys pulling the tires off really takes a toll on the wheels... I bet that you can find tires and wheels better than $1500 a wheel setup...

Splurging

I splurged on this one. I always have ordered a winter wheel and tire package from Tire Rack in the past. They did not have any wheels for the GL63.
Advantage of OEM wheels is year round coverage under optional MB wheel and tire insurance. I know this was not the most economical move.

I am considering this set of rims for my winter tires (link below). The main issue is this set has a 50 offset and the OEM's are 46. Will it make a big difference? Opinions?

Check load rating, I bought a pair off ebay and it was not load rated for the GL only ML and returned them.

The load rating on the non-OEM wheels are 1,650 each. What is the load rating for the OEM wheels?

Check your GAWR. Mine is:
The front GAWR = 1,550 kg, so divide that by 2 = 775kg. Or 1,709 lbs
The rear GAWR = 1,800 kg, so divide that by 2 = 900kg. Or 1,983 lbs

Tirerack won't sell you a wheel that has a load rating less than half the GAWR of the heaviest axle.

For the price savings... You can simply buy another one if it cracks...

My 22s are something like 26 and 34 ( gives a staggered look using the same size tire all the way around...

Your offset might make the wheels sit "in" a little bit bit you could always buy a set of HRE spacers to bring them out a little bit.

Here are spacers that I used on my previous GL550 to utilize AMG wheels off the ML63..
In fact I still have them but they are 25mm... Way to much for this application.

Also...4mm might not be something that you will notice aesthetically but it could be an issue clearing the front brake caliper... Check that first before you mount a tire on the wheel.
