ECU bricked by Mercedes Software update

Hi All,

New to forum. I have a 2015 AMG GL63 that I recently took in for a scheduled service (B Service), and to get a diagnosis on a check engine light warning that came on for a few hours and then turned off. Dealer said that the code was for a cold start misfire. They recommended a software update to correct. Well, they downloaded the update and it completely bricked the ECU. The car won't start, and is not drivable. This was not a tune. This was just a Mercedes software update. After 12 days of the Software Engineers being unable to figure it out, and after escalation through Mercedes USA Customer Service, a new ECU was ordered and installed. However, in programming the new ECU, apparently the same faulty update automatically downloaded from Germany and bricked the new ECU! With no resolution in sight, I am wondering if anyone here has ever heard of, or experience this, and if so, would you mind sharing the resolution? Many, many thanks in advance!

This is something that honestly was all too common. They push software updates which may or may not resolve any issues. The MB tech specialists that visit the dealers can open a TAC case and contact MB specialists that can essentially push old "un-broken" software into the ECM and atleast rectify the issue until their "software update" can be fixed.

It sad when this happens, but again, its all too common with all the stupid software updates MB comes out with.

Hey, thanks for the super quick reply! I was just talking to MBUSA customer care, and told them what you said. He is going to ask if that is a possibility. I am hopeful that they can restore to the unbroken software. Any idea, if the specialists can push the software onto the bricked ECM or do you think a new ECM has to be used? Thanks again for your insight!

If they are more than just the usual dealership clown, they should have knowledge enough to do this to the original ECU or even the new bricked one. My old shop foreman was doing this process on a regular basis every month with all these stupid "updates and fixes"
