Oil change questions
Hi Group,
I'm in the process of getting an earlier GL63. I like to work on my own car for simple issues such as oil, filters, brake changes, etc. One of the first thing I'm going to do upon delivery of the vehicle is to change the oil. My internet search skill has failed to identify a video or step wise instructions for this specific vehicle. I saw on youtube a few AMG oil changes for other vehicles but it actually created additional questions.
Could someone who wrenches their own car answer the following:
1. Does the X166 GL63 have a remote oil cooler so that oil has to be drained from two different plugs (one for the oil pan and another for the oil cooler unit)?
2. If there is a second oil plug to loosen, where is it located and is there a crush washer needed to be replaced similar to the oil pan?
3. The other Mercedes vehicles that I maintain talks about extracting oil through the dipstick. The couple videos I saw for the other AMG models performed the traditional oil plug drain method. Is this what AMG recommends?
4. What is the torque specification for one (maybe both) plugs
5. Anything else to keep in mind when performing this service?
Thanks in advance for any assistance the forum can provide.

Bring the engine to operating temperature, this ensures all thermostats are open in the oil cooling system.
I prefer bottom drain. Remove underbody shields and remove drain plug. Use a new crush washer and torque to 30Nm.
Remove old filter, install new, install oil filter assembly and torque to value molded into the housing.
Fill with oil. Use the bevo site to find your oil grade. Use the search feature on this site to find the quantity.
Run the engine. Turn it off. Wait 5 minutes, measure with the dipstick. Add more oil if needed.

Use the bevo site. For my GLE 350 with M276 3.5L NA V6 I use Mobil 1 FS 0W-40. I don't know what the M157 5.5L TT V8 requires, check the bevo site. The oil needs to meet an MB spec number.

MBWorld Fanatic!
M157 engine (the one in GL63) requires 229.5 and yes Mobil 1 FS(fully synthetic) European Formula 0W-40 meets it.
According to Mercedes, all M157 engines (like in GL63) require traditional drain method instead of extraction via dipstick (for M278, M276, etc.) to insure that all old oil is removed. Having said that, I "alternate" - do two oil changes via dipstick extraction myself (removes about 8L out of 8.5L, but I pour back required 8.5L which means engine burns the rest 0.5L which is normal) and let dealer do the next one via draining from the bottom.

Sorry for the error on the engine. M157 is correct. Post has been edited.

I did remove the oil through the dipstick and then tried to do the rest through the plug, but there was nothing left, not even single drop. So essentially dipstick extraction works very well and there is no need to go under, at least on my 2014 GL63.

Just acquired a 13 GL63 and the first thing on the list was an oil change, this is excellent info and I will put 0w40.
