Test Drove Audi Q5

GLC owner for a year. Brought my car in dealer for service and noticed the Audi dealer next door got a large shipment of Q5s. Took a test drive and had these impressions:

1. The visibility is better than GLC. Maybe coz large windows.
2. The 2.0T engine is quieter and smoother than MB 2.0T.
3. Gas paddle travel is really long...
4. Front seat leg room is better than GLC so I can move driver seat all the way forward.
5. Interior materials although high quality, seems to be hard to the touch.
6. The doors and side pillars seems more flimsy than GLC.
7. Less road noise than GLC - I think it is because its Continental non-RFT.
8. Ride is bouncier than GLC -- seems less stable than GLC at high speed.
9. DIdnt like the seat where the leather portion is narrow and the plastic base is pretty wide.

Any other things you guys noticed?

To #7. To me Q5 has more road noise.
Audi seat doesn't have knee extension, its available only in SQ5 or with Sport seat.

Center console right under dashboard is hard plastic, unbelievable.

Still manual steering wheel adjustment not a big deal but its not 16K car.

Liked B&O sound and panoramic roof.
And big plus it has spare tire with good side cargo space.

The Audi has a standard panoramic sun/moon roof, which is continuous instead of the split design on the GLC. Only thing I believe the Audi has that is clearly superior to the Mercedes.

Nice. big [plus for sure.
is it split and only half opens or does the whole thing open.
kind of disappointed that the MB doesn't seem to open that much given the size.

Yeah, I agree. The Audi one is larger, but like the Mercedes only opens half way (the front half). Although it looks cleaner as it is almost continuous instead of the beam across the middle in the GLC.

Also emergency brake and side traffic alert is standard on Q5, which is good.

Well, not in the base model build. It's a $1500 option...just did a test build. Also, am perplexed by the layout...so the round selection knob is forward of the gear selector...and ahead of the cup holders...so lets say you have occupied cupholders, then the selector knob for command system (or whatever Audi calls it vs MB) is much less accessable... unless I'm missing something. One of the beauties of the GLC layout is resting one's arm on the armrest and the selector knob is exactly arms length away (instead of reaching over the cups and gear shift selector).

They made the gear selector big and flat to rest your arm on when you use the wheel

These two vehicles aren't even in the same category. The GLC competes with the Q3..

It does, he's mistaken.

GLA = Q3
GLC = Q5
GLE = Q7 (though Q7 has until recently been in that inbetween category where it's technically also somewhat competitive with the GLS since it was also a 7 seater, but that'll change with the Q8 I think)

^ you guys are right lol, my mistake. I always thought the Q5 compared to the ML series from back in the day. I never really compared the q7 since it was a 7 seater, whereas the ML (now GLE) is a 5 seater. I always thought it was a direct competitor to the GL/GLS.

Anyways, sorry for the confusion, carry on
