Crabbing tyres

GLC43 are coming out of the factory on 255 40 21 continental sport contact BMW on the front (Rolls-Royce spec) and Mercedes-Benz MO spec on the rear.
Some vehicles of the GLC with 20' wheels are being fitted with Goodyear eagle F1 all season tyres. The problem MB are facing is that there are not many all season tyres in that size that are run flats. Now the Goodyear tyres are being run out in our neck of the woods.
The tech that I spoke to when I was in Auckland, New Zealand was very helpful but also very careful with what he said.

Thanks for update and intel from NZ.
Agree All Seasons getting harder to source.
Had not heard of the F1 variety, that will add a new alternative to the mix.
Shame Vredestein have not jumped in and sent some 20” tyres to Oz at this stage.

I recently had the ContiSeals ( star ) fitted to the front which solved the crabbing completely.. Its been cold and wet here in Western Australia, and the tyres havent crabbed once. Ive tried it on paved surfaces, smooth bitumen, smooth concrete forecourts. The tyres are awesome!

The conti seal 21 inch tyres have been fitted to cars in the UK for over a year and owners have reported that the tyres start crabbing as they wear and they wear quickly.

oh great.. ive got something to look forward to - not!.. Ive taken tread depth readings whilst the tyres are still new..7.0mm on the inside tracks and 6.5mm on the outside tracks. I'll continue to monitor them to see how they go..

I was told that the crabbing is mostly a problem in the colder months and with less and less tread. Also some reports of approximately 9000km per set of front tyres on continental both mo and star spec

FWIW, I only experience this issue at near full steering lock in reverse. I have 20'' Goodyear tires and it's a US spec LHD vehicle. I'm sure that the RHD steering geometry exacerbates the issue and that's why the UK, and OZ owners are getting this issue with the smaller diameter wheel setup.

I have about 14k miles on the vehicle and the tires do not appear to be wearing abnormally.

CLA45 AMG 2016
Anyone else in Sydney (or Australia) that has a C43 experiencing the crabbing issue? Any solutions? Conti seal tyres fixed the issue?

My C43 2018 is 4 months old. The crabbing/skipping started 2 weeks ago.

Would like to make an official complaint to MB and Consumer Affairs. Anyone already started the process?

I would like to add that I don't believe the crabbing issue is on all cars despite some reporting it as such. Example - I had a CLA 45 2016 for 2 years and never had the issue whereas my dealer told me he does on his car. I also have a GLC 250 with no issues yet others have reported they do. It is not consistent. I believe MB is telling lies as far as I am concerned.

I live in sunny Florida and the first time it happened to me was backing out my driveway .
It was a cool day not a cold day and the noise made me think there was something wrong with my front end.
Does anyone know if MB in the USA is doing anything about this problem?

It's 'normal' for the vehicle. You can swap tires to disguise it but the design of the suspension isn't gonna change.

I have read its a design issue and that seems to be the case, but I have noticed a big difference having switched to my winter wheel / tire set up. I am not experiencing the skipping/crabbing that I was with the summer tires. So for me, this isn't a big deal as I will always be swapping in and out to handle the winter in Chicago.

Im in Baltimore too. Just took delivery of a GLC63 and mine are doing this too - curious as to what I should do. Don't notice it really happening at high speeds, only when I am pulling out of driveway or out of parking spot really. What are your thoughts?

It only happens to me while turning hard while backing up.
Sound like something broke in the front end.
Living in Florida it only happens in cooler weather.
I do have the 21in wheels with the Conti tires.
My dealer said they never heard of it.
I plan to have them set me up with the Mercedes factory rep to complain about this
issue
Other than

Topcoat F11 shine
the crabbing I love this SUV !!!

the SUV is awesome! I am going to talk to them tomorrow and see what they say, it seems as low there isn't a solution though other than just switching out tires for winter and summer.

I would change my dealer if he hasn't heard of an issue that has been there since 2016.

Crabbing

I’m sorry I never responded. I ended up getting rid of the GLC43 due to the problem. Dealer wanted me to keep replacing the tires, and I got tires of getting the runaround.

Been running Nokian WR SUV 4 winter tyres for last few months. 265/40 21 front and 275/40 21 rear. Great job. No crabbing at all. Mercedes have agreed to fit free continental bmw summer tyres on front when I change back.

GLC AMG crabbing fix good news

Just spoke to Mercedes at Goodwood. They have told me a suspension fix is in development for RHD GLC AMG models. Can't tell me when it will be available. Dealerships don't know about it yet

Fisher writes...

the tyre skipping is less frequent or less annoying when the car was brand new, very likely the tyre was new. As the tyre starts to running down, it gradually becomes more unpleasant noticeable

Hmm is it about this petition?

We have dropped to fall weather on some days down here in Texas and zero issues with crabbing still on the Continental ExtremeContact Sport summer tires.
On the Continental SportContact SSR stock tires, I was crabbing at 60*F. We got down to mid 50s in temperature this weekend and zero issues for me.

I have said this in several posts here, the crabbing was a tire problem on my GLC63, not suspension problem.
I have not experienced it in both ExtremContact Sport and ExtremContact DWS 06 tires. 17k miles on my 19 GLC63.

Right here in Texas with you. On our "colder days" here lately I have serious crabbing but then again my tires are worn out.

I also had the same crabbing on my GLE63s, it's just what they do unless it's warm and you have good thread on the tires.

GLC63 AMG S Coupe
Just to add my 5 cents to this discussion.
My 2019 GLC63 S coupe with factory Michelin Pilot 4S 21 inch tires, I started to experience crabbing issues when backin up and the temperature dropped below +7 deg C.
After getting a set of 19-inch Fast wheels and Continental Viking 7 winter tires - 255/50R19 - the grabbing problem is gone at any temperature.
