2018 GLC43 Navigation Screen Change - update needed?

Hello all,

I recently experienced a change in the Navigation screen layout (has switched to a basic display) versus the more colorful navigation screen. The vehicle has just turned 6 years old when I took note to the change.

Is this something other have experienced? Is this a Mercedes default setting that changes automatically at year 6?

I've notice navigation SD cards are available in the aftermarket (eBay, Amazon, etc). Would these update the navigation system (maps, image, etc). It appears these would just plug into the center console SD slot?

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Thoughts and input would be appreciated.

This probably needs some pictures to show what you are talking about. There are also different navigation systems. The COMAND system doesn't use SD cards. The SD cards are for the entry level navigation system. There's nothing that changes in the navigation system based on age, except the maps get outdated over time if they are not being updated. 2020+ model years now have online updates for the maps, so they stay updated.

My hunch is that you may have night mode active during the day. Navigation systems typically have a night mode and a day mode. The day mode is colorful and the night mode is more monochrome to be easier on the eyes in the dark. Normally the default is that it switches between them based on whether your headlights are on or off or the amount of light detected by the ambient light sensor. Could be that the ambient light sensor is faulty or you accidently made night mode your permanent mode. This can be changed in the settings usually.

No such lucky with the settings (night mode).

Perhaps since a SD card isn't applicable for a 2018 model... I'll call the dealer for the possibility of a software update? Has anyone gone this route?

Thanks

Yes, it is but cost varies actually. You could however consider using Google Maps or Waze as it is free as well as real time traffic, etc. instead if your car has smartphone integration, I thought the 2018 model year started to have that?

~ From my understanding the smartphone integration didn't begin until 2019 unfortunately.

The dealer did mention they have a navigation software update (via the parts department) called a 'Nav Pin' Code. This allows service to update the system. The quoted price was $341.62 to complete the update. The software is a 21/22 model year update.

Had anyone else updated theirs in this fashion?

The C Class got the Smartphone integration starting with 2018, but it was sort of a separate system not compatible with COMAND. You had to either option the Multimedia package (COMAND) or the Smartphone integration package, but they couldn't be combined together. Then in 2019 COMAND was upgraded to NTG 5.5 and the Smartphone integration was part of it. Standard in the USA, but an additional cost option in other markets. I don't remember if the initial Smartphone integration from the C Class made it to the GLC, but the GLC was only facelifted in 2020 when it got MBUX, which also included a similar Smartphone integration, but the biggest complaint about the MBUX version is that neither CarPlay nor Android Auto are full screen. With NTG 5.5 in the C Class, CarPlay is full screen, however Android Auto is not. NTG 5.5 and MBUX as of 2019 also have OTA updates, so map updates are part of the Mercedes me subscription instead of costing an arm and a leg if done at a dealership with the older systems. Take a look at BenzNinja, though. He can update your maps at a much more reasonable cost.

I see, in that case, just buy those android box/module/stick? I think we have a sponsor on the forum that sells them as well, forgot the name and use smartphone integration that way. not sure if it is compatible though, confirm with seller first with VIN (and?)/or model year.

I see, that explains it.
