Anyone replace Radio/Nav Control Unit with used one? and coded it?

I have a 2017 GLC43, so my radio/nav unit needs to be replaced. First symptom of problems was GPS was always on 'Activating Navigation' display, but it never activates. Brought it to dealer, they wanted $6k to replace the whole headunit, ahhh no thanks thats like 1/3 of the value of the car now. Ok fine, I can live without the built in Nav since I can use my phone for that.

Then recently the radio, media, 360 camera started acting up. Yes, I did the 'CD eject button' reset, that is how I can get some function. Some meaning, if I want to hear the radio and there is nothing, I do the reset procedure and I can get the radio working. But whatever station or volume I want it to be at, I need to do it within prob 5-10 secs after the restart, after that the radio stays at the current station/volume, pressing buttons wont change it. So when I get the radio working, the 360 camera will not. Meaning, I put it in reverse and the 360 screen comes in but there is no camera feed. So to get the camera working I have to turn off the radio, reset, turn off the car, and turn on the car again...the 360 camera then usually works (sometimes I may have to let the car sit a while).

I want to get one of the aftermarket larger android screen displays as well, but I think I should get the head unit issues sorted out first.
Has anybody gone thru with getting a used OEM unit off ebay, get the pin code, and re-code the head-unit for your vehicle themselves?

I'm also wondering if an aftermarket android display would work fine(use carplay for nav and music) if I just swapped it in with my headunit as is...

Thx.

I have the after market head units in the ML and the GLC. I like them they work well. But I think you’ll need the main unit working well for the android screen to work. It basically all hooks through the main unit. If you can use your auxiliary port ok it will work through that but id be worried about the cameras still not working.
