Is there some unsaid understanding or a written rule to that effect? I might need some help getting y $2k deposit back as I got tired of waiting and Bought an inventory car from another dealer. The specs were too close to what I wanted in a GLE 450 - it was hard to pass it.

Had originally ordered end of April 2019, build date was 1st decade August, now pushed back to August 23. No VIN.
This was a Red with espresso leather with AMG ext, prem package, DAP, airmatic and parking package.

Today, I bought a Diamond White with Machiatto interior with all the above packages plus technology package, energizing plus and 4 zone climate control. A bit pricier but so glad I actually have a car that I can drive!!! Will post pics soon.

I haven’t told my first dealer yet, but I asked him if he would refund my deposit. He said that’s non refundable. I asked about the option of using that money to purchase a prepaid service package but he said “can’t do that”.

any help is appreciated! I just couldn’t wait any longer. One in hand better than one in bush!

Congrats. You must have signed something? PM Terry Fabbri (fabbrisd1); he's with a dealer in Arkansas and a straight-up guy.

My take is that it’s a Mercedes policy or you are stuck if it’s like most deposits. You might get an answer from MBUSA. Or PM Fabris.

Sounds like a dealer who doesn't value repeat business or vehicle service customers. That $2K is small money compared to what they could get by simply refunding it and becoming your vehicle service provider (not to mention the goodwill they'd bank that might land them a sale in four or five years).

Thank you Greg. Its great to finally have the car. It is pretty clear that I have a lot to learn!

Thanks for the tip Greg and Ron. I have sent a PM to Fabbri.

I fully agree with you bigpern. I was surprised to hear that the deposit is non refundable. would make me think twice to go back to this dealership again at all - for service or future purchases. They might still refund the deposit, but just the way the sales associate sounded so inflexible, I think they have lost me as a customer period. I would rather drive 90 miles to another dealership that values my business. I even asked them about the option of using that money to purchase prepaid service package, but the sales associate told me "it cant be done". I felt this way atleast they still get some business, but they are really playing hardball. I would probably need to have a word with their manager.

Contracts in UK normally say that if the car is not delivered within 6 weeks of delivery date the buyer can cancel in writing and all monies returned, is there nothing in your agreement with them like that.

Here in Spain it is the same: 6 months and then you are “free to go”. I suspect that is standard EU policy of MB.

Can’t imagine the survey a dealer will receive after sticking it to a customer, I would think they will refund it is just bad business and had much more downside these days than the little bit of profit they *might* make.

Question: I am 4 weeks away from promised production date. Should a VIN number be already issued at this point?

VIN & production status

No, don't think so. The VIN is assigned at the start of production when a body shell is put into your order. That should happen within the decade scheduled; if not there is slippage. Not sure how long the typical production should be at this point, but I think around 10 days. Once the VIN is assigned that does not mean you are home free, as delays during production can happen, as many of us have seen. Hopefully the bugs are getting worked out.

That's not right - "released to rail" should mean it is done. Frustrating!

Has your dealer checked with regional distribution?

Mine was scheduled for 2nd Decade August production, and I've been checking on status every couple of weeks with my dealer. Everything was fine until August 1st when I checked again and was told production delayed until September 17th Only a month extra (hopefully), but still annoying. I wonder if now having a specific date (17th) increases confidence versus just having a decade.

Unfortunately, no; once you have a PO number there are always at least three dates: decade planned, decade scheduled & production date. The production date, which looks like a hard date, can still slide, as mine did 3 times before they just quit updating it.

I've been checking weekly so 4 weeks out for scheduled production hopefully it happens.
Then again as seen from your examples above it could be that they push it back like a week before production...

At this point you have to make up your mind, get ready for long wait. No matter how mad you are most likely your delivery date will slip. Unless it’s a 350, i think they are focusing on building 350 to make up all the lost revenue.

I do not think they are focusing on GLE350, Mine is Gle 300D was ordered in mid December2018, Built should have been decad1 March, Since then Final inspection slipped numerous times, My car still in nowhere to be seen.

At my dealer this morning I noticed a ton of 350s on the lot, no 450s.
